Snappers' Winning Streak Snaps at Five

Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, Wisc. - Beloit's five-game winning streak was abruptly snapped on Wednesday night as the Snappers fell to the Cougars, 7-1. After delaying Kane County's clinch of the Midwest League Western Division playoffs for two consecutive nights, Beloit was unable to do so on this night as the offense could only muster two hits. The pitching staff also had a particularly rough night that saw starter Brett Graves (12-7, 5.02 ERA) depart early with an apparent injury. The bullpen could not bail him out, and the Cougars ended up with 16 hits on the night.

Kane County quickly got on the board in the first inning thanks to a gift run. Ildemaro Vargas and Cody Regis hit back-to-back singles to lead off the game. Graves came back to strike out Henry Castillo, but then, during Marty Herum's at-bat, Vargas attempted to steal third. Catcher Iolana Akau's throw eluded third baseman Jose Brizuela and sailed into left field, allowing Vargas to score easily.

The Snappers quickly answered back in the bottom of the first. Justin Higley led off with a walk and then Mikey White lined a single to right field, advancing Higley to third. Brizuela drove him in with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

The Cougars retook the lead for good in the fifth, however, as Quinnton Mack led off the inning with a solo shot to left center. One batter later, Graves spiked a pitch into the ground and then, after a meeting at the mound, was taken out of the game due to injury. Rob Huber took over on the mound, but he could not stop the bleeding as he gave up an RBI single to Regis later in the inning.

Kane County's offense continued to break out and sealed the game in the late innings. Colin Bray scored on an RBI single by Dawel Lugo in the seventh inning, and then Castillo hit a two-run triple followed by a Herum RBI groundout in the eighth.

While it was a bumpy night for the pitching staff as a whole, it's worth noting the starting rotation's outstanding performance for the past week or so. Over the past six games, the rotation-- Graves, Joey Wagman, Heath Fillmyer, Daniel Gossett, and Junior Mendez-- has gone 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 32 innings of work.

The Snappers will start their last road trip of the season tomorrow in Appleton against the Timber Rattlers. They will play the remaining five innings of a suspended game from July 13, then start the scheduled game that will be seven innings. The Snappers will send Wagman (8-2, 3.67 ERA) to the hill. He'll be opposed by Jon Perrin (1-5, 4.31 ERA).

The Snappers are 51-76 on the season and 25-32 in the second half and are a third-year affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. To buy tickets, stop by the office at Pohlman Field or call (608) 362-2272.
