
Chiefs Claim Series with 7-5 Win

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Cedar Rapids fell to the Peoria Chiefs, 7-5, in the rubber game on Wednesday night. Edgar Corcino and Rafael Valera each recorded a multi-hit game while T.J. White led the Kernels with two RBI. Corcino went 3-for-5 with a two-out RBI double and a pair of singles while Valera finished the evening 2-for-5 with a double and a run. White went 1-for-4 with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.
Cedar Rapids took an early 1-0 lead with a two-out run in the bottom of the first. Valera started the inning with a one-out double into the right-center gap. Two batters later, White brought in Valera with a two-out RBI double down the left field line.
The Kernels added another run in the bottom of the third. Austin Diemer was hit on the side to begin the frame. Sean Miller then drew a walk, moving Diemer to second. Two batters later, Corcino reached on an infield single, loading the bases for Cedar Rapids. White put the Kernels up 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Diemer.
Peoria (37-21, 70-56) went in front of Cedar Rapids, 3-2, with three runs in the top of the fourth. Oscar Mercado led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Paul DeJong moved Mercado to third on a groundout to second. A wild pitch scored Mercado for the Chiefs first run of the day. Alex DeLeon recorded the second hit of the frame with a single to center. Harrison Bader tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI triple to left-center field. Nick Thompson followed Bader with an RBI single to center, plating DeLeon.
Cedar Rapids (31-27, 72-56) regained the lead with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brian Navarreto drew a two-out walk. Diemer deadlocked the game at 3-3 with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Navarreto from second. Sean Miller put the Kernels on top of the Chiefs, 4-3, with an RBI single to center.
The Chiefs regained the lead with three more runs in the top of the fifth. Darren Seferina started the inning with a one-out single to left-center. Seferina advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mercado then reached on a Kernels fielding error, giving the Chiefs runners on first and second. DeJong loaded the bases for Peoria with an infield single. DeLeon tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Seferina from third. Bader gave Peoria a 6-4 advantage with a two-out, two-run triple to left-center field.
Brian O'Keefe increased the Chiefs lead to 7-4 with a solo home run to left field to begin the sixth.
The Kernels reduced the Chiefs lead to 7-5 with a two-out run in the bottom of the ninth. Valera singled up the middle before Corcino brought him in with an RBI double into the right-center gap. Corcino advanced to third on a Peoria throwing error.
Sam Clay (0-3) suffered the loss in his first start of the year with Cedar Rapids. Wednesday's start was Clay's first outing with the Kernels since May 15. The southpaw allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out two. Jared Wilson allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out a pair in two innings out of the bullpen. Michael Theofanopoulos yielded three hits and struck out one in two scoreless innings of relief.
Ian McKinney (3-0) earned the win for Peoria. McKinney allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings. Tyler Bray (5) recorded a hold. Bray yielded a hit and a walk and struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief. Jery Then (1) secured the win with the save in the bottom of the ninth. Then allowed one run on two hits and struck out one in an inning out of the bullpen.
The Kernels resume a six-game homestand on Thursday with three games v. the Kane County Cougars, the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. First pitch in the series opener is at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. LHP Randy Rosario (1-4, 3.92) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while LHP Jared Miller (3-4, 6.60) counters for Kane County.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch between the Kernels and Cougars is set for 6:35 p.m.
