August 26, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Davenport, IA - After each team tossed a shutout in one of the first two games of the series, the rubber match, and final meeting of the season between the Clinton LumberKings (15-43, 41-86) and Quad Cities River Bandits (36-22, 81-45), saw both teams score in the first inning. Clinton plated one run on a sacrifice fly, while Quad Cities scored three runs and did not look back in route to a 6-3 win.
After an 18-0 shutout in the series opener, Clinton bounced back last night with a 3-0 win, and got off to a good start in the series finale Wednesday night. Brock Hebert led off the game with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Gianfranco Wawoe's sacrifice fly. That however was the only half inning that ended with Clinton in the lead, as righty Agapito Barrios (W, 2-1) pitched five+ strong innings. Barrios departed midway through his second batter in the sixth due to injury, but the River Bandits' bullpen pitched four scoreless innings.
Down 1-0 after half an inning, Quad Cities plated three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the first. Lukas Schiraldi (L, 4-12) allowed three hits and walked a batter in the frame. With two outs, Drew Ferguson scored on one of Schiraldi's three wild pitches on the night, which tied the game at one. With two men on, Jason Martin singled to right field. That plated Nick Tanielu, while Estarlyn Morales' throw to the plate sailed over everyone and bounced off of the home dugout and allowed Ramon Laureano to score all the way from first base. Morales was charged with his 10th error of the season and Quad Cities led 3-1 after one full inning.
Schiraldi allowed another two-out run on an RBI triple by Ferguson in the second inning, and two more two-out runs on RBI singles by Ferguson and Tanielu in the fourth inning. Clinton trailed 6-1 after four innings. Schiraldi went five innings, but allowed six runs, five earned, seven hits, and walked four in the loss.
Steve Naemark and Angel Heredia (SV, 10) each pitched a pair of scoreless innings for the River Bandits, while Ronald Dominguez tossed three perfect innings of relief for the LumberKings. Wayne Taylor hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning off of Barrios, which cut the deficit to three, but Clinton failed to get a runner beyond second base after Taylor's third home run of the season. Ferguson finished as the only hitter with multiple hits (3-4), while Estarlyn Morales had his six game hitting streak snapped with an 0-3 night.
Off of the series loss, Clinton will head to Burlington and begin a three game series at Community Field vs. the Bees Thursday night. Zack Littell (3-6, 3.69) will start for Clinton. The righty allowed five earned runs over 4.2 innings in his only start vs. the Bees. Burlington will send Justin Anderson (8-9, 3.67) to the hill. The 2014 14th round pick allowed five runs, three earned, over five innings in his only start vs. Clinton. First pitch in Burlington is set for 6:30 CT. The LumberKings radio broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
