Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 25, 2015) - Clinton LumberKings left-hander Eddie Campbell pitched eight strong innings for Clinton, allowing two hits and walking two batters while striking out three, as the visitors shut out the Quad Cities River Bandits, 3-0, in front of 1,769 at Modern Woodmen Park Tuesday night.

A night after the River Bandits (35-22 second half, 80-45 overall) shut out Clinton (15-42, 41-85) by allowing one hit in an 18-0 series-opening victory Monday, the LumberKings held Quad Cities to four hits. The eight innings was a career high for Campbell (2-2), who held Quad Cities to its lowest hit total in 11 games since collecting two hits at Lake County Aug. 14.

The LumberKings took the lead in the fourth inning against Justin Ferrell (4-3) for their first run in more than 15 innings. Center fielder Austin Cousino began the frame with a base hit. Ferrell then retired second baseman Gianfranco Wawoe on a fly ball to right field and designated hitter Burt Reynolds on a strikeout. Right fielder Estarlyn Morales, who did not play Monday, was able to cash in the lead-off base hit, however, with a double to right-center field that scored Cousino and give Clinton a 1-0 lead.

Quad Cities had a base runner in each of the first four innings, including a one-out double in the second inning by catcher Trent Woodward, but the River Bandits were unable to score a run.

After Ferrell allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts in six innings, left-hander Zach Davis worked two hitless innings. Clinton added two insurance runs in the ninth inning against right-hander Eric Peterson, as Morales hit a leadoff single, stole second base and scored on first baseaman Pat Leyland's double down the left-field line. Leyland later scored on a two-out infield grounder by left fielder Arby Fields, who reached first base when first baseman Ryan Bottger dropped a throw to first base. Peterson was charged with two runs - one earned - on two hits and one walk with one strikeout in one relief inning that gave Quad Cities a 3-0 deficit.

The River Bandits' best opportunity came in the seventh inning following a leadoff double by designated hitter Bryan Muñiz. Pinch runner Drew Ferguson advanced to third on a ground ball by Woodward. When left fielder Jason Martin grounded to Wawoe, Ferguson beat the throw to third base, allowing Martin to reach on a fielder's choice as Ferguson beat the throw back to third, putting runners on the corners with one out. With shortstop Kristian Trompiz batting, Martin was caught off of first base by Campbell on a throw to the first baseman Pat Leyland. Chasing Martin towards second, Leyland tossed the ball to the shortstop Brock Hebert, who put the tag on Martin for the second out of the inning. Meanwhile, Ferguson ran home while the rundown was happening between first and second, but he was thrown out by Hebert on the relay home to catcher Adam Martin to retire the side and complete a 1-3-6-2 double play.

The River Bandits were only able to muster one more baserunner, on a ninth-inning, leadoff single by center fielder Bobby Boyd. Clinton closer Kody Kerski then struck out the next three batters to end the game and earn his seventh save of the season.

The River Bandits' season series with Clinton concludes Wednesday at 7 p.m., as right-handers Agapito Barrios (1-1, 0.81) and Lukas Schiraldi (4-11, 4.87) will start for the River Bandits and LumberKings, respectively.
