Dayton Dragons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio-Tyler Mahle, Brennan Bernardino, and Conor Krauss combined on a six-hit shutout as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 1-0 in a suspended game that was completed on Wednesday afternoon. Lake County won the regularly-scheduled game that followed, 9-2.
Mahle (12-7) earned the win in the suspended game, which began on Tuesday night and was stopped after a rain delay. The game resumed on Wednesday afternoon with the Dragons leading 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Bernardino fired three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk with three strikeouts, and Krauss tossed a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save.
The only run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning Tuesday night, just before the game was suspended. Luis Gonzalez lined a double to left-center field, went to third on Gavin LaValley's ground out, and scored on Avain Rachal's two-out, infield single.
Mahle lowered his earned run average to a league-leading 2.34 by throwing five shutout innings. He allowed four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
In the second game, Lake County broke open a 4-2 game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Dayton's Shed Long belted a solo home run in the sixth in game two to extend his hitting streak to 13 straight games. Long led a seven-hit Dragons attack, going 2 for 4.
Dragons starting pitcher Wyatt Strahan (8-10) was charged with the loss. He worked six and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) with three walks and three strikeouts. Strahan began the day ranked fifth in the Midwest League in earned run average, and finished the day with an ERA of 2.78, still good enough to join three Dragons teammates among the league's top-10 in the category.
The Dragons finished their nine-day road trip with a 4-4 record, taking two-out-of-three at Lake County.
The Dragons (26-31 in the second half; 65-62 overall) return home on Thursday to open a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. Tejay Antone (6-9, 2.87) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Chris Pike (9-7, 3.08).
Thursday and Friday night's games will be televised on WHIO digital channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372). All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
