Kuhn, Raga Lead Snappers Past Cougars

Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - For the second consecutive night, the Snappers denied the Cougars their playoff berth, defeating them 6-2 for their fifth consecutive win. The story was similar to Monday's game as Max Kuhn had a big day and Argenis Raga drove in the go-ahead runs. Junior Mendez (4-11, 5.73 ERA) had an uneven start but ended up pitching well enough to earn the win.
Mendez's night got off to a rough start as he allowed a home run to leadoff hitter Ildemaro Vargas, immediately putting the Snappers in a 1-0 hole.
Beloit answered in the third inning when Justin Higley tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, but Mendez quickly gave the run back in the fourth. Colin Bray walked with one out, and then stole both second and third base. Mendez had a way out of the inning after he struck out Stryker Trahan, but with Joe Munoz batting, Mendez threw a wild pitch that allowed Bray to score from third.
The Snappers have put together many explosive rallies during this winning streak, and the fifth inning was their inning today. Tim Proudfoot led off the inning with a single to center, then, one batter later, Cougars starter Brent Jones (2-5, 3.98 ERA) hit Mikey White with a pitch. Kuhn followed that up with a game-tying single to center. Jones then walked Jose Brizuela to load the bases. That it would be it for Jones, who was replaced by reliever Nick Baker. He couldn't stop a red-hot Snappers lineup either, however, as Raga smoked a two-run single to left field, giving Beloit a 4-2 lead.
Beloit tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a two-out double from White and Kuhn's eighth home run of the year, a bomb to left field.
Nearly every player in the Snappers' lineup contributed to Tuesday's win. White, Kuhn, Sandber Pimentel, James Harris, and Proudfoot had two hits apiece. Kuhn led the way with three RBIs while Raga drove in the game-winning run for the second night in a row.
After the wild pitch in the third inning, Mendez was able to shut down Kane County's lineup for the most part. He went five innings while giving up two earned runs on two hits. Mendez walked two and struck out two. The bullpen was also solid on Tuesday, as Jonathan Massad-- who coincidentally played college ball with Mendez at Southern New Hampshire University-- and Jose Torres combined for four shutout innings with eight strikeouts.
The Snappers will look to sweep Kane County and push their playoff berth back at least another day tomorrow at 7:00 PM CT. Brett Graves (12-6, 5.11 ERA) will go for Beloit. He'll look to build off his last start in which he struck out eight batters in five innings, one of his better starts this year. The Cougars will counter with Brad Keller (7-9, 2.51 ERA).
The Snappers are 51-75 on the season and 25-31 in the second half and are a third-year affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. To buy tickets, stop by the office at Pohlman Field or call (608) 362-2272.
