New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Norwich, CT- David Smith connected for his team-leading 23rd home run, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning, but it wasn't enough as the Connecticut Defenders edged the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-2, Monday night on Carlos Sosa's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the loss, New Hampshire (68-66) slips back into a second-place tie with Portland for the final playoff spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division after the Sea Dogs dumped the Trenton Thunder, 5-2, at Hadlock Field.
Connecticut (57-76) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win its fourth straight game, the longest current winning streak in the league. Jake Wald (1-for-3, 2 R, 2B, BB) doubled off Jesse Carlson with one out in the ninth inning and scored when Sosa (1-for-4, RBI, BB, R) singled down the right field line for the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game.
Carlson (8-2) had a personal six-game winning streak snapped as he lost for the first time since May 15. The left-hander allowed one run on three hits in 1.2 innings. He struck out three.
Joe Bateman (4-1) pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to win his fourth consecutive decision.
Smith (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) put the Fisher Cats in front, 2-0, in the first inning by knocking Nick Pereira's 0-1 pitch deep over the fence in left-centerfield with Dustin Majewski (1-for-4, R) on first base following a lead-off single.
Pereira would yield only four more hits -all singles- in his eight-inning outing. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one.
New Hampshire starter Ty Taubenheim allowed two runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out six, walked three and hit a batter.
Taubenheim walked Wald and Sosa on the first eight pitches he threw in the third inning. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, John Bowker (1-for-3, RBI, HBP) drove in Wald with a ground out and Randy Ruiz (2-for-3, RBI, BB) scored Sosa with an RBI single to centerfield, tying the game, 2-2.
The Fisher Cats and the Defenders continue their five-game series with a doubleheader Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium. New Hampshire sends left-hander Kurt Isenberg (4-9, 5.50) to the mound against right-hander Dave McKae (5-4, 4.32) in game one before southpaw Jo Matumoto (3-4, 3.94) makes a spot start in game two against Defenders' right-hander Ryan Sadowski (3-3, 3.16). The opening game starts at 6:05pm with radio coverage beginning at 5:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network (610-AM, Manchester; 930-AM, Rochester; 1540-AM, Exeter) with Mike Murphy.
