2007 Eastern League All-Stars Announced

The selections for the 2007 Eastern League All-Star Team were announced last week. The complete list of selections for the team, which were voted on by Eastern League managers, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media, are listed below.

Trenton's Horne Named Pitcher of the Year

On Saturday afternoon the Eastern League announced that Trenton Thunder pitcher Alan Horne has been named the 2007 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. The 24-year old has been the ace of the Northern Division leading Trenton pitching staff, compiling a record of 12-4 with a 2.91 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP while striking out 161 batters and walking 53 in 148.1 innings of work this season.

The 6'4", 195 lb. hurler has given up just one earned run or less in 13 of his 25 appearances and has struck out at least seven batters in a game 13 different times. Alan, who was 6-9 with a 4.84 ERA and 122 strikeouts in his professional debut for the Single-A Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League last season, currently leads the league in ERA, is tied for the league lead in strikeouts, tied for third in wins and ranked fourth in innings pitched.

Horne was named the right-handed starting pitcher on the recently announced 2007 Eastern League All-Star Team and was also chosen to represent the Northern Division during the 2007 Eastern League All-Star Game where he struck out a pair of batters during one scoreless inning of work in the rain-shortened contest.

Alan was selected by the New York Yankees in the 11th round of the 2005 draft after going 10-2 with 108 strikeouts and a 4.05 ERA in 113.1 innings of work as a junior at the University of Florida.

Bowie right-handed starter Radhames Liz finished second in the voting for the award and Portland right-handed starter Clay Buchholz finished third in the voting. The award was voted on by respective Eastern League managers and coaching staffs, writers and radio and television broadcast personnel.

Thunder Unveil New Logos

On Thursday afternoon the Trenton Thunder held a press conference at Waterfront Park to unveil new logos and uniforms that will be used during the 2008 season. The new primary logo features an animated cloud holding a lightning bolt and incorporates the navy blue found in the New York Yankees color scheme. The alternate logo is an animated lightning bolt holding a bat to form a 'T". Fans can purchase merchandise featuring the new logo at Waterfront Park and online at www.trentonthunder.com.

Utley Rehabs In Reading

All-Star second baseman Chase Utley and right-hander Adam Eaton each rehabbed with the Reading Phillies over the weekend. Utley, who has been on the DL with a broken hand since July 26th, hit .100 (1-for-10) with a walk during three games with the R-Phils on Friday and Saturday. Eaton started the opening game of a doubleheader on Friday night for Reading and gave up two runs on three hits while striking out one batter in two innings of work.

Radhames Liz Promoted

Baysox right-handed starter Radhames Liz became the 100th Baysox player in franchise history join the Major Leagues, when he was promoted to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. The 24-year old made his Major League debut on Saturday against Minnesota and gave up five runs on four hits and three walks in six innings of work in an 8-1 loss to the Twins at Camden Yards. Liz, who was the runner-up for the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year Award, had given up only two runs on two hits through the first five innings before running into trouble in the top of the sixth inning.

Trenton Clinches Division Title

Despite losing to the Binghamton Mets in 14-innings on Sunday afternoon, the Trenton Thunder still managed to clinch the Northern Division regular season crown thanks to the Portland Sea Dogs loss to New Hampshire.

Trenton's chase for their first championship in franchise history will begin on Wednesday, September 5 at 7:05 p.m. when they host the second place team from the Northern Division in the first game of the best-of-five Northern Division Championship Series.

Eastern league Team News and Notes

For the week ending 8/30/99

Akron Aeros

1B/OF Jordan Brown has reached base safely in 32 consecutive games, which is the third longest streak in the league this season. During the streak he is batting .347 (43-for-124) with six doubles, three homers, 26 runs scored, 15 RBI, 19 walks and a .438 on-base percentage. In his last four starts LHP Scott Lewis is 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA. INF Brandon Pinckney is batting .400 (8-for-20) with one homer, seven RBI and four runs scored over his last five games.

Altoona Curve

RHP Romulo Sanchez recorded two outs without allowing a hit in his Major League debut for Pittsburgh on Sunday at Houston. The 23-year old went 6-3 with one save and a 2.81 ERA in 40 relief appearances for the Curve this season. Since July 1, RHP Chris Hernandez has posted a 4-0 record and a 1.32 ERA during a span of 20 relief outings. The Curve were shutout in a franchise-record three consecutive games from August 18-21.

Binghamton Mets

The B-Mets will close out the season playing 11 games over eight days during their final homestand of the year, which includes three doubleheaders. RHP Kevin Mulvey struck out a league-high 16 batters in 13 innings of work last week. The Binghamton bullpen allowed just one run over 24.1 innings pitched during a four-game series at Trenton over the weekend.

Bowie Baysox

RHP Radhames Liz struck out six batters in three innings of work against Trenton last Monday at Prince George's Stadium in his final appearance with the Baysox before being promoted to Baltimore. The Baysox have lost five straight games and are now five games out of the playoffs in the Southern Division standings.

Erie SeaWolves

The SeaWolves have won five straight games and nine out of their last 10 to build a four game lead over second place Akron in the Southern Division standings. RHP Eddie Bonine won two games last week to become the league's first 14 game winner.

Harrisburg Senators

OF Rogearvin Bernadina stole four bases last week to push his season total to 39, which ranks second in the league. During the month of August INF Marcos Yepez is batting .333 (28-for-84) with five doubles and 16 runs scored. The Senators are currently last in the league in team ERA (4.85) and team batting (.246).

New Britain Rock Cats

RHP Anthony Swarzak picked up his fifth career Double-A win last week with 8+ innings of shutout ball at New Hampshire. For the week he pitched a league-high 14.1 innings and struck out 13 batters without allowing an earned run. With 6,035 fans in New Britain Stadium on Friday night, the Rock Cats passed the 300,000 attendance total on their earliest opening (58) in franchise history.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

E.L. Player of the Week Dustin Majewski led off the bottom of the first inning with homers on Saturday and Sunday against Portland. In Saturday's game, Majewski and OF Aaron Mathews went deep back-to-back to start the game, the first consecutive home runs for New Hampshire this season. RHP Kyle Yates won both of his starts for the Fisher Cats last week, allowing just one earned run in 12.2 innings of work against New Britain and Portland. Yates has won a team-leading nine games this season.

Connecticut Defenders

The Defenders bullpen has allowed two earned runs in 25 innings of work since August 17. 1B/DH Randy Ruiz went 9-for-20 (.450) with three home runs and three walks in a five game series at New Britain over the weekend. OF John Bowker has hit three homers in his last two games and he has hit a career-high 20 home runs this season for the Defenders.

Portland Sea Dogs

OF Bubba Bell was named the California League MVP and 1B Aaron Bates was named to the California League All-Star Team. RHP Michael Bowden is 5-0 in his last seven starts and leads the team in wins with eight. The Sea Dogs sold out all six days of the last home stand from August 17-22 and they enter this week with a streak of nine consecutive sellouts.

Reading Phillies

The R-Phils finished the home portion of their schedule with a record of 39-32. 3B Mike Costanzo has reached base safely in 33 of his last 34 games. OF Greg Jacobs was named team MVP in an awards ceremony held on Saturday night and LHP Chris Key was named the team Pitcher of the Year.

Trenton Thunder

With Portland's loss to New Hampshire on Sunday the Thunder clinched first place in the Northern Division for the second straight season. It is the third consecutive season that Trenton has qualified for the postseason. INF Mike Kinkade is batting .375 (24-for-64) with 15 RBI in 17 games during the month of August.
