Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Miguel Negron had a hand in all of the Binghamton Mets' runs in the opener of their doubleheader with the New Britain Rock Cats, a 6-5 B-Mets win at NYSEG Stadium Monday. Brett Harper had three hits in the nightcap, but New Britain picked up a 6-2 victory to earn the split.
In Game 1, New Britain (62-70) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Garrett Guzman's RBI single and Matt Moses's two-run double. The B-Mets got a run back in the third when Negron walked, stole second and scored on Wilson Batista's double to right before David Winfree homered and Brandon Roberts singled in a run in the fourth, upping the Rock Cats lead to 5-1.
Binghamton (58-75) got within one in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Nickeas and Luis Rivera began the rally by drawing back-to-back walks with two out. Negron drove in both with a double before Batista and Mike Carp walked, loading the bases. Negron then scored on a passed ball that cut New Britain's lead to 5-4.
Edwards Guzman began the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Jamar Hill reached on a infield single before Vince Harrison bunted into a fielder's choice that forced out pinch-runner Rafael Arroyo at third. Jose Mijares (5-3) then walked Nickeas to load the bases. After pinch-hitter Caleb Stewart struck out, Negron walked to force in Hill with the winning run.
In the nightcap, New Britain took a first-inning lead when Trevor Plouffe scored on a two-out error. The B-Mets tied the score in the second when Brett Harper singled, Guzman walked and Rivera singled to score Harper. Harper homered off Jesse Floyd (6-9) with two out in the third for a 2-1 B-Mets lead.
New Britain got to B-Mets spot starter Robert Paulk (2-4) for three runs in the fourth. Luke Hughes put the Rock Cats ahead for good with a two-run double before Rashad Eldridge singled in another run. Eldridge scored on an error in the sixth and Hughes added an RBI single in the seventh for New Britain's final margin of victory.
Tuesday, the Binghamton Mets play the third game of their six-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats. Michael Devaney (5-8, 5.18) will start for the B-Mets against lefty Glen Perkins (0-1, 5.06) of New Britain.
