
Smith dominant as Kernels drop LumberKings, 8-1

Kernels starter Will Smith (9-4) allowed a run on four hits and struck out six over six innings as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Clinton LumberKings, 8-1 on Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids. The Kernel bullpen delivered three scoreless innings as Chris Armstrong and Francis Cabrera combined for three strikeouts and no hits allowed.
Gabe Jacobo was 1-4 with a solo home run, 2 RBI and scored three runs. Four Kernels had two hits: Tyson Auer, Roberto Lopez, Matt Crawford and Darwin Perez. Auer was 2-3 with double and RBI and Perez was 2-4 with an RBI as the Kernels took advantage of four Clinton errors resulting in three unearned runs.
Clinton scored in the top of the second inning on a leadoff home run by Nate Tenbrink, his ninth of the year. Scott Savistano was 1-4 with a double as the LumberKings were held to four hits. Starter Maikel Cleto (0-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 3.1 IP in taking the loss.
The first 1,000 fans through the gates when they open on Wednesday at 5:30 pm receive a free magnet of former Kernel and current LA Angel, Erick Aybar, presented by Xquisite Limo, Mix 96.5 FM and WMT AM 600. First pitch between the Kernels and LumberKings is set for 6:35 pm.
The playoff-bound Kernels continue an eight game home stand through Monday, August 31st. Tickets for the remaining six games may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Wednesday morning.
