Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Midland, MI - TinCaps RHP Erik Davis struck out a career-high 11 as he picked up his 14th win in a 5-1 win over the Great Lakes Loons, Wednesday at Dow Diamond. Jaff Decker slugged a two- run homer to pace the offense.
The TinCaps took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd , thanks in part to a key error. Cole Figueroa led off with a single to center. Then Daniel Robertson reached when a grounder toward the first baseman was misplayed for a two-base error. With runners at second and third and nobody out, Yefri Carvajal drove in a run with a groundout and Justin Baum lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0.
In the 4th , Fort Wayne plated another run before their rally stalled. The first four hitters of the inning singled, including Carvajal's infield hit which drove in a run to push the lead to 3-0. But after back-to-back strikeouts, RHP Bobby Blevins induced an inning-ending groundout to limit the damage.
The TinCaps added on to the lead in the 5th . Kevin Hansen led off with an infield single and Decker followed with a two-run blast to right to make it 5-0.
Great Lakes got on the board in the bottom of the 5th when Davis walked the leadoff man. After a single by Matt Wallach, Jaime Pedroza hooked an RBI double into the right-field corner to cut the lead to 5-1. Davis then struck out Nick Buss for his 11th strikeout of the night and induced an inning-ending flyout.
The Fort Wayne bullpen took control from that point as RHP Nick Schumacher, LHP Allen Harrington and RHP Brad Brach combined for four scoreless relief innings.
Davis (14-6) went five innings, allowing a run on four hits and two walks. He is approaching the franchise record of 15 wins, set by LaTroy Hawkins in 1993, the team's inaugural season. Blevins (9-10) took the loss.
The TinCaps improved to 87-42 for the season, 42-17 in the second half. Great Lakes fell to 73-56 on the year, 33-26 for the half.
Fort Wayne and the Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) finish the four-game series Thursday at Dow Diamond at 7:05pm. Fort Wayne RHP Stiven Osuna (9-8) starts for Fort Wayne against Great Lakes LHP Aaron Miller (2-1).
