Chiefs Beat Bandits 7-3 Wednesday
Rundle hits 3-run homer; Magic number is two
Peoria, IL - Behind Drew Rundle's second inning three-run home run, the Peoria Chiefs never looked back, defeating the Quad Cities River Bandits 7-3 Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. Alberto Cabrera entered the game in the fifth and with the win, now has the most career wins at O'Brien Field with eight. The win moves the Chiefs to 36-22 on the half and 74-53 on the season while their playoff magic number drops to two.
Quad Cities tallied runs in both the first and second innings to take the lead against starter Chris Archer. D'Marcus Ingram led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Jarred Bogany. With one out, Xavier Scruggs singled to score Ingram for the first run. Domnit Bolivar led off the second inning with a walk and advanced to second on a walk to Roberto Espinoza. Ingram hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both base runners and a ground out by Bogany scored Bolivar to make it 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second.
The Chiefs responded in their half of the second. With two outs, Nelson Perez singled to right-field and advanced to third on a double by Mario Mercedes. Rundle hit a shot over the left-field wall for his third home run of the season to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead.
Peoria added to their lead in the third against Quad Cities starter Jorge Rondon. With one out, Ryan Flaherty doubled and reached third on a passed ball with Rebel Ridling batting. Ridling singled to score Flaherty for the first run of the inning. Kyler Burke was issued a walk to advance Ridling to second and a single by D.J. LeMahieu scored Ridling and advanced Burke to third. Perez reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to score Burke to give the Chiefs a 6-2 advantage.
The Chiefs tallied another run in the fourth against reliever Jonathon Gonzalez. Rundle led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Junior Lake. David Macias grounded into a force out at second, advancing Runde to third. Flaherty grounded into a force out at second to plate Rundle and add to the Chiefs lead. The River Bandits got one run back in the fifth. Ingram began the inning with a walk and scored on a triple by Bogany to make it 7-3.
Quad Cities threatened in the eighth against Cabrera. With one out, Frederick Parejo singled and advanced to second when Ryde Rodriguez reached on a fielding error by LeMahieu. After Cabrera walked Bolivar to load the bases, Ryan Buchter came in to get the Chiefs out of the jam. Espinoza grounded into a double play to end the threat and the inning.
The River Bandits threatened in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate. With one down, Bogany walked and reached third on a single by Rich Racobaldo. With the second out recorded in the inning and pinch-hitter Jermaine Curtis batting, Racobaldo took second on defensive indifference. Curtis walked to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. Parejo struck out swinging to end the threat and the game.
Archer gave up three runs on three hits in his four innings of work. The right-hander walked five and struck out five. Cabrera (8-2) threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up two hits while walking three striking out three. Buchter earned his fifth save of the season, throwing 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit while walking two and striking out three.
Playoff Watch - With 11 games remaining the Chiefs have a six and a half game lead over Burlington who won twice against Wisconsin 2-1 on Wednesday. That puts the magic number for a division title at five. The magic number for a playoff spot is two with Clinton, who was rained out at Cedar Rapids Wednesday. Clinton and Cedar Rapids are now scheduled for a Thursday night double header.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Drew Rundle (LF) - Rundle was 2-for-3 on the night including his third home run of the season in the second to give the Chiefs the lead. He also had three RBI, scored two runs and walked.
Notes...
