Hawks Beat Dragons 3-1, Take 2 Game Lead in Playoff Race

South Bend, Ind.-Four South Bend pitchers combined to allow just five hits as the Silver Hawks defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-1 on Wednesday. South Bend topped the Dragons for the third straight night and increased their lead to two games over the Dragons in the wildcard standings with 11 games to play.

Silver Hawks pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts and limited Dayton to just five hits. Dayton went a combined 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

South Bend starting pitcher Ryan Cook worked the first five innings and struck out nine, allowing four hits and one run. The South Bend bullpen allowed just one hit and no runs over the final four innings.

South Bend took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Jake Elmore delivered a two-out single with Clayton Conner at third for the game's first run.

Dayton tied the game in the fourth when Carlos Mendez doubled to start the inning and eventually scored on Kevin Coddington's single to right to make it 1-1.

South Bend regained the lead in the sixth. Conner doubled to start the inning. Reynaldo Navarro bunted the ball to the side of the mound and Dragons pitcher Jordan Hotchkiss threw wildly past first base allowing Conner to score to make it 2-1. South Bend added another run against Dragons reliever Mike Bohana in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring.

The Dragons meet South Bend again on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as Dayton tries to avoid the sweep. Mark Serrano (1-0, 1.88) will start for Dayton. The next home game is Friday at 7:00 against the Lansing Lugnuts at Fifth Third Field.

Notes: The start of the game was delayed one hour, nine minutes by rain.
