Hawks Fan 14, Defeat Dayton 3-1

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - Four Silver Hawks pitchers combined to strike out 14 Dayton Dragons hitters, and South Bend took the third straight game in the series, winning Wednesday night by a 3-1 final at Coveleski Stadium. The victory puts South Bend two games in front of Dayton for the wild card spot with 11 to play in the regular season.

After the start of the game was delayed an hour and nine minutes because of rain, the Dragons bats never seemed to wake up. Ryan Cook (ND) had a lot to do with that, as the South Bend starter struck out nine in his 5.0 innings on the mound. The nine K's by Cook is both a personal high for him and a team high for the 2009 season.

Daniel Vasquez (WP, 4-1) followed with two scoreless innings striking out two. Bryan Woodall (ND) struck out two in a scoreless eighth, and Justin Mace (SV, 10) struck out the final batter of the game to earn the save.

The 14 strikeouts for South Bend ties the team high for 2009, established on May 31st against the Clinton LumberKings.

Offensively, Jake Elmore put South Bend out in front 1-0 with his fifth RBI of the series on a single in the second inning. Clayton Conner scored on the play, after leading off the inning with a double.

Dayton tied the game against Cook in the fourth in a similar manner. Carlos Mendez led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by Kevin Coddington to knot the game at 1-1.

After Vasquez pitched around two South Bend errors in the top of the sixth, a costly error by Dayton starter Jordan Hotchkiss (LP, 3-5) gave the Silver Hawks the lead in the bottom of the inning. A.J. Pollock started the inning with a bunt, and Reynaldo Navarro laid down a bunt. Hotchkiss fielded the bunt but threw wildly to first, with his error allowing Pollock to score for the 2-1 South Bend lead.

The Silver Hawks added an insurance run in the eighth, with Justin Parker driving home Pollock from second base to put the final margin at 3-1.

The four game series concludes as the Silver Hawks go for the sweep on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM Eastern Time. LHP Keny Sosa (0-3, 2.70 ERA) will be on the mound for South Bend against Dayton's RHP Mark Serrano (2-0, 1.88 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
