Bandits Strand 12 Runners In Loss

August 26, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday night, but quickly saw it disappear and went on to strand 12 baserunners during a 7-3 loss to the Peoria Chiefs at O'Brien Field.

The loss dropped Quad Cities (25-33, 55-73) to 4.5 games behind Burlington in the race for a Western Division playoff spot with just 11 games remaining second half. Peoria (36-22, 74-53) bounced back from an early deficit to grab the lead with seven unanswered runs, overcoming 10 walks thanks in part to the River Bandits' 1-for-17 performance with runners in scoring position.

Quad Cities took an early 2-0 lead thanks to single runs in the first and second innings. In the opening frame, D'Marcus Ingram started the ballgame with a single and came around to score on a liner off the wall by Xavier Scruggs. One inning later, Domnit Bolivar reached on a leadoff walk and eventually came home on a run-scoring groundout by Jarred Bogany.

But in the bottom of the second, the Chiefs mounted a two-out rally that turned the game around. Quad Cities starter Jorge Rondon had retired the first five men he faced before Nelson Perez yanked a single to right and Mario Mercedes doubled him to third. The next batter was Drew Rundle, who worked the count to 3-1 before blasted an opposite-field homer that put Peoria out in front, 3-2.

Four more runs crossed the plate for the Cheifs over the next two frames. In the third, Ryan Flaherty clubbed a one-out double off the wall and became Rebel Ridling's 90th RBI of the year after a base hit to right. Later in the frame, a run-scoring single by D.J. LeMahieu and a fielding error on a groundball made it 6-2. After Rundle drew a leadoff walk and scored in the fourth, seven unanswered runs gave Peoria a comfortable 7-2 edge.

Jarred Bogany tripled home a run with nobody out in the fifth to make it 7-3, but the River Bandits never got any closer. In the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, Quad Cities had a runner at third with less than two outs but could not turn the opportunities into any runs. They loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings, only to watch the Chiefs work out of both jams to cement the victory.

Alberto Cabrera (8-2) earned the win for Peoria, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Ryan Buchter (5) recorded five outs to earn the save, inducing a double play ball to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth before a strikeout left the bags packed in the ninth.

Rondon (1-4) suffered the loss for Quad Cities, tagged for six runs on seven hits in just three innings of work.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits continue an eight-game road stretch with the finale of a four-game series at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night in Peoria, and will be back at Modern Woodmen Park for the final three regular season home games of the year from September 2-4. The action resumes with a Modern Woodmen Half-Price night on Wednesday, September 2, as the first 1,000 fans will get a special River Bandits hat and the famous Klement's racing sausages will be in attendance. The last Thirst-day Thursday of the year will also be Tattoo Night, and fans that get a free River Bandits tattoo will be able to show it at the box office for a free berm ticket to any game in 2010! Lastly, the 2009 regular season will conclude with Fan Appreciation Night on Friday, September 4, featuring the first-ever Bandit Wedding and one last pyrotechnic extravaganza on a Fireworks Friday!
