Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps (34-25; 77-52) broke an early tie with a four-run fourth inning and received fine relief from Victor Larez to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (23-35; 49-78), 8-3, on Wednesday night at Oldsmobile Park.

Starter Brayan Villarreal (5-4) struck out eight Lugnuts over five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, before letting Larez take care of the rest.

The right-hander gave up a single and a walk in a scoreless sixth before setting down the final 11 Lansing batsmen of the game, closing out the victory and notching his third save.

Lansing starting pitcher John Anderson, received earlier in the day from Class A-Advanced Dunedin, gave up five hits and two runs over 2 2/3 innings before departing with the score tied at 2-2.

The Whitecaps pounced on Jonas Cuotto (3-7) in the fourth, climaxed by Ronnie Bourquin's two-run double.

Lugnuts third baseman Balbino Fuenmayor drove in a pair of runs in the losing cause, but also committed a pair of costly errors. Left fielder Welinton Ramirez went 1-for-4 with a single and has hit safely in each of his first six games with the Lugnuts.

West Michigan and Lansing will play the finale of their four-game series on a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Ryan Shopshire (0-0, 2.00) will start for the Lugnuts against Whitecaps right-hander Anthony Shawler (6-4, 4.41).
