Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass.) - The Brockton Rox (21-19) swept a doubleheader by the final scores of 13-2 and 6-4, as well as completed a four game series sweep of the New York Federals (8-32) before the largest crowd of the season Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium.

Brockton's offense pounded out 13 runs on ten hits in game one, doing most of the damage against Michael Streaman (1-3) and the Feds pitching staff in the third frame. Sending twelve men to the plate, the Rox scored seven runs on five hits, highlighted by two-run doubles from Melvin Falu and Mike Torres.

Torres knocked in a game high three runs while Chris Valencia scored thrice in the first three frames and drove home two.

Ryan Royster's first two-run blast of the evening, capped the scoring for Brockton as the Rox cruised to victory in game one behind a solid performance from Mike Smith (4-4). Smith earned his team high fourth win, lasting six frames and allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out seven.

Game two was a tighter affair that went to the sixth inning with the Federals leading the Rox 3-2, after Royster and Eddie Lantigua traded two-run homers in the early innings. The home run for Royster, his second of the night and twelfth of the season, put him back alone atop the Can-Am League leader board.

In the sixth, the Rox batted around plating four runs on five singles, chasing Feds starter James Kukucka (2-2), and taking their first lead and final lead of the second game. Kukucka took the loss, giving up five runs in five innings, while Dustin Birosak improved to a perfect 4-0, lasting six frames and allowing three runs on five hits.

It took three pitchers to close things down in the last frame for Brockton, with Jake Hale (1) collecting the last out and his first save of the season.

A season high 2,681 fans were on hand for the double dip as the Rox completed the series sweep, taking all four from the visiting Federals.

The homestand continues Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. as the Pittsfield Colonials make their first trip to Brockton this season. Freddy Flores (3-2, 3.31) gets the call in game one, with the series and homestand wrapping up in game three Tuesday morning at 11:05 a.m.
