Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Abraham Nunez and Mark Minicozzi walked with the bases loaded, plating the game-tying and go-ahead runs for the Tornadoes in a 7-6 victory on Sunday afternoon against the visiting New Jersey Jackals. Worcester held three different leads in the game, surviving three Jackals homeruns (including two in a four-run fifth).
Nick Serino (2-5) picked up the win in relief of Shawn Gilblair. Serino struck out the side in the sixth inning, walking one. He retired the only batter he faced in the fifth, as he induced a pop out with Mike Jones at the plate and a runner on for New Jersey.
Mike Petrowski was tagged with the loss, blowing the lead that starting pitcher Shaun Ellis left with. Petrowski retired one batter, walked three, gave up two hits and two runs.
The Tornadoes struck first with an unearned run in the second inning. Ryan Crespi hit a ball to third base that Nick Giarraputo botched, allowing Nick Salotti to score. The Jackals had an answer in the following half inning.
Chris Anderson hit the first of his two homeruns in the top of the third, with his two-run shot giving New Jersey its first lead.
Worcester bounced back with a three-run third, will all three hits (and all four baserunners) coming after Ellis recorded the first two outs. Minicozzi doubled, Alex Trezza walked, then Salotti knocked them both in with a two-base hit, and Cam Monger plated him with another double.
The Jackals put four runs up on the board in the fifth inning, with back-to-back solo homers by Jordan Newton and Anderson, plus a two-run single by Myron Leslie.
Chris Colabello added a homer of his own, tagging a solo shot to left in the bottom half of the frame to pull the Tornadoes within one at 6-5. The next inning, the Tornadoes sent eight men to the plate, leaving the bases loaded but walking the two most important runs home.
Game two of the series is Monday night, as the Tornadoes will send Matt McDonald to the mound against Ryan Kulik. The first pitch is at 7:05pm, with the gates opening at 6:00.
