Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Rockland Boulders snapped their 13-game losing streak in game one of the doubleheader, but the Worcester Tornadoes erased a five-game skid of their own in the second half of the twin bill at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field on Monday night.
Four Boulders home runs provided six of the seven runs needed in the 7-6 opening game victory. The first three batters of the game all scored when Keith Brachold hit his first of two round-trippers in the first contest.
In the bottom of the frame, the Tornadoes scored three runs of their own, on a Mike Gedman bases-loaded walk, a Cam Kneeland bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly by Cameron Monger.
Rockland scored at least one run in each of the first five innings of game one, adding a Landis Wilson solo bomb to give the team its second lead of 4-3 in the second. An inning later, Brachold went deep again to extend the lead.
Worcester took its only lead of game one with a three-run third inning. Monger had a two-run triple (in a 3-for-3 game), and Tony Patane knocked him home with a groundout. The lead only lasted until the following frame.
In the top of the fourth, a sacrifice fly by Chris Valencia knotted the game at six apiece, with Cole Kraft scoring the tying run.
One inning later, the Boulders took the lead for good with a lead-off solo home run for Phil Cuadrado.
Gedman, who was the starting pitcher for Worcester went the distance for his third complete game of the season. He got the loss, allowing seven runs (all earned) on ten hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three opponents.
The win went to the first reliever out of the pen, Eric Federico. The right hander relieved Will Hassett, who faced just four batters, allowing one hit and three walks (plus three runs). Federico allowed three runs of his own to score in four innings of work, walking one batter and giving up four hits.
Garrett Johnson had a pair of shutout frames, and Adrian Martin held on for his 16th save of the season.
The second game featured Kyle Regnault's first career win. The southpaw made his third start of the season and tossed six scoreless frames. He retired the Boulders in order four times, allowing just two hits and a walk. He struck out four Rockland hitters in the triumph.
Dan Jurik was issued the tough-luck loss in the nightcap, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run on four hits. He didn't walk anyone and recorded five strikeouts.
Nick Serino earned his 11th save of 2012 with one inning of work, giving up a walk, but striking out the final two hitters he faced swinging.
Jerod Edmondson tripled to lead off the first for Worcester and scored when the next batter, Ryan Brockett, grounded out. Tony Patane was 2-for-2 with a single and a double in the second game.
The third game of the four-game set is Tuesday at 7:05pm, the final Two for Tuesday in 2012. The gates open at 6:00. Pre-game coverage on USTREAM.tv begins at 6:50.
