New Jersey Jackals News Release
Worcester, Mass. - Fresh off a 10-hour bus ride following last night's Jackals' victory in Quebec City, New Jersey Jackals' catcher Chris Anderson homered twice, but the Worcester Tornadoes used a pair of bases-loaded walks in the sixth inning to secure a 7-6 victory in the opener of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Hanover Insurance Park.
Trailing 1-0 after Worcester plated an unearned run in the bottom of the second, New Jersey took the lead when Anderson went deep for the third time this season, lifting a two-run homer to center field following a Jeremy Slayden single to give the Jackals a 2-1 advantage.
However, Worcester countered in the bottom of the third, using a trio of doubles to push three runs across and take a 4-2 lead.
New Jersey jumped back on top in the top of the fifth inning when Anderson and left fielder Jordan Newton laced back-to-back solo home runs and Myron Leslie added a two-run single later in the inning to put the Jackals ahead 6-4.
A Chris Colabello leadoff homer in the fifth inning pulled Worcester within one before the Tornadoes took advantage of a trio of walks in the sixth inning when Abraham Nunez drew a bases-loaded free pass to tie the game and Mark Minicozzi walked with the bags full to cap the scoring.
Offensively for New Jersey, Mike DeJesus went 3-for-5 with a double while Leslie finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
In his fourth start of the season with the Jackals, Shaun Ellis struck out a season-high eight batters but did not factor in the decision after allowing five runs (four earned) on six this over five frames. Worcester starter Shawn Gilblair was tagged for six runs (five earned) over 4 2/3 innings. Reliever Nick Sernio (2-5) picked up the win for Worcester while Mike Petrowski (1-3) allowed a pair of singles in the sixth inning to absorb the loss. Tornadoes' closer Rick Asadoorian allowed a two-out single to DeJesus in the ninth to put the tying run on base, but escaped the jam to notch his sixth save of the season.
The Jackals and Tornadoes continue their three-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
