Sky Sox Continue Undefeated Streak against Nashville in Game Two
May 9, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After four lead changes, the Sky Sox walked away with a 6-5 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday night to improve to 5-0 against Nashville this season.
The home team found their way onto the board first here in game two. In the bottom of the second, Colorado Springs starter Bubba Derby recorded a strikeout to start the inning before issuing a pair of walks to Nick Martini and Josh Phegley. Sheldon Neuse doubled for both Nashville's first hit and RBI of the evening, scoring Martini from second to give the Sounds an early 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless third inning, Colorado Springs scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Keon Broxton led off the inning by reaching on a wild third strike from Sounds starter Frankie Montas, and after Eric Sogard flew out to right field, Ji-Man Choi sent a homer over the right-center field wall to give Colorado Springs a one-run lead.
The lead was short-lived however, with Nashville answering in the bottom half of the frame. Martini matched Choi's effort with a solo homer of his own to tie up the ball game at two apiece. Phegley followed Martini's homer with his second walk of the evening, moving up on a Neuse single as he collected his second hit of the game. Slade Heathcott then lined an RBI single to score Phegley and retake the lead for Nashville at 3-2.
Looking to capitalize on the momentum of the prior inning, Franklin Barreto kicked off the fifth for the Sounds by reaching on an infield error. Anthony Garcia crushed a dinger to left field on the very next pitch for Nashville's second home run in as many innings to extend the Sounds lead by two more runs.
Montas pitched another scoreless inning for Nashville in the sixth, exiting the game after six innings having only allowed two runs on five hits with a sole walk and ten strikeouts. He was replaced on the mound at the start of the seventh by Raul Alcantara, who was unable to record an out before being replaced on the mound himself by Jeremy Bleich in a wild half-inning that saw Colorado Springs score four times on three base hits and two Nashville errors.
Kyle Wren and Gabriel Noriega led off the seventh with back-to-back singles, and with his 18-game hitting streak on the line Nate Orf doubled to score Wren and extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Broxton then hit what would have been a sacrifice fly for an out but a fielding error on the right field line by Garcia allowed Noriega to score and Broxton to reach safely. Alcantara was then replaced on the mound by Bleich, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Eric Sogard, scoring Orf and tying the game at 5-5. With Choi at the plate Broxton stole third for his eighth steal of the season to move within 90 feet of home. Choi then hit into a fielder's choice, but first baseman Heathcott had a wide throw home to try to get Broxton and his throwing error allowed Broxton to score safely and make it 6-5 Sky Sox. Jacob Nottingham drew a walk before Christian Bethancourt hit into a double play to end the topsy-turvy half-inning. 6-5 proved to be the final score however, as Colorado Springs took game two.
Tomorrow's game three against the Nashville Sounds is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. MST at First Tennessee Park. The Sky Sox return to Security Service Field for an eight-game, nine-day homestand on May 12 where they will host the Oklahoma City Dodgers and Memphis Redbirds. NOTES
Tomorrow's Expectation: In the third game of this four-game series against the Nashville Sounds the Sky Sox are sending righty Michael Brady to the mound to face right-hander Daniel Gossett for Nashville.
Wednesday Warriors: Coming into Wednesday night's game the Sky Sox were undefeated at 4-0 in Wednesday contests this season, and with the win improved to 5-0 on hump day in 2018.
Five in a Row*: With a win Wednesday night the Sky Sox improve to 5-0 against the Sounds this season, after having gone 3-0 against Nashville at home in Security Service Field last week (*with game four being suspended due to travel curfew).
You Underestimate the Streakiness: Nate Orf currently boasts an active 19-game hitting streak, which was continued Wednesday night with a double in the wacky seventh inning. In 19 games, Orf has gone 34-for-73 with 17 runs, 14 RBI, and four stolen bases. Of those 19 games, Orf has had multiple hits in 11 of them. In fact, there have only been four games this season when Orf has NOT had a hit. His longest streak last season was nine games.
Familiar Faces: Boone Logan threw one scoreless inning of relief Tuesday night against the Sounds, walking one and striking out three. In so doing he became the seventh Sky Sox player to play for the Sky Sox during both the Colorado Rockies affiliation (1993-2014) and Milwaukee Brewers affiliation (2015-present): Boone Logan (2014 COL, 2018 MIL), Michael McKenry (2010, 2014 COL, 2016 MIL), Jim Miller (2011 COL, 2016 MIL), Chris Nelson (2010-2012 COL, 2015 MIL), Josh Roenicke (2011, 2014 COL, 2015 MIL), Rob Scahill (2012, 2014 COL, 2016-2017 MIL), Eric Young, Jr. (2009-2011 COL, 2016 MIL). This will now equal the number of seven Sky Sox players to play for the Sky Sox during both the Cleveland Indians affiliation (1988-1992) and Colorado Rockies affiliation (1993-2014): George Canale (1992 CLE, 1993 COL), Alan Cockrell (1990, 1992 CLE, 1994-1996 COL), Jerry Dipoto (1992 CLE, 2000 COL), Tom Kramer (1991-1992 CLE, 1996-1998 COL), Nelson Liriano (1992 CLE, 1993, 1998 COL), Rudy Seanez (1989-1991 CLE, 1993 COL), Terry Wells (1992 CLE, 1993 COL).
Strong Starts: Alec Asher picked up his second win in three starts Tuesday night to improve to 2-0 on the season, making Colorado Springs starters 12-3 with a 3.51 ERA coming into Wednesday night's game.
R-I-S-P-E-C-T: After struggling with runners in scoring position in the previous series against the OKC Dodgers, the Sky Sox went 7-for-11 with RISP Tuesday night.
K's for Days: Alec Asher struck out seven batters on Tuesday night, continuing the trend of high strikeout counts for Colorado Springs starters lately. Freddy Peralta struck out eight batters through four innings on Monday, the day after Corbin Burnes struck out 13 batters through seven innings. That's 28 strikeouts through 16.1 innings between Asher's, Peralta's, and Burnes' back-to-back-to-back starts.
Burnes' Baker's Dozen: After striking out 13 on Sunday, Corbin Burnes becomes only the fourth Sky Sox pitcher in team history to record 13 or more strikeouts in a game. Burnes ties Edwar Cabrera and the late Mark Brownson as the other two pitchers with 13 strikeouts in a game. John Thomson holds the single game record, with 14 strikeouts. The Sky Sox home record is 12 K, by Nate Minchey, vs. Tucson Sidewinders, June 4th, 1997 (12 K in 9 IP) [CG], and by Mike Saipe, vs. Vancouver Canadians, May 15th, 1998 (12 K in 9 IP) [CG].)
This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox are currently in the midst of an eight-game road trip. After playing four games in Oklahoma City against the Dodgers and going 1-3, the Sky Sox are set for another four-game series against the Nashville Sounds before returning home on the 12th for an eight-game, nine-day homestand that will see them host the Dodgers for four games followed by the Memphis Redbirds for four games.
NEXT GAME: Thursday, May 10 @ Nashville Sounds - 5:35 p.m. MDT @ First Tennessee Park
