AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Sixth-Inning Surge Lifts Fish Past RedHawks

June 9, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg Goldeyes teams of yesteryear have had their problems in Fargo. After all, the Goldeyes have posted just three winning records at Newman Outdoor Field since they first tangled with the RedHawks back in 1996. However, the 2012 edition of the Goldeyes isn't pay attention to that fact.

The Goldeyes (15-6) waltzed into Fargo Saturday night and doubled up the RedHawks (9-13) 9-4 before a quiet gathering of 3,095.

Winnipeg has won the first two games of this three-game series and, going back to last year, the Goldeyes have won seven straight against the RedHawks.

After Fargo broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run, the Goldeyes blew the doors off the game with an eight-run sixth inning. In total, the Goldeyes used seven hits and had the benefit of a Fargo error in the inning. The turning point came via a two-run double from David Narodowski with the bases loaded to give Winnipeg a 4-1 lead. Previously to Narodowski coming to the plate, Fargo walked Amos Ramon intentionally to load the bases with one out and set up a force at any base. However, Narodowski ripped a pitch off the left-field wall and Winnipeg scored four more runs in the inning.

"I had a similar situation happen in Lincoln and I didn't come through," Narodowski said. "I came up in that situation again and tried to learn from the one before.

"PK (Price Kendall) came up to me and told me, 'You have to take advantage of this.' I was definitely excited to come through and prove myself."

Fargo scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the threat ended when Sergio Pedroza was tagged out by Ramon on a rundown.

Winnipeg tallied the final run of the game in top of the ninth inning when Jon Weber scored on a Luis Alen groundout.

Six different Goldeyes drove in runs in the game, including two each from Narodowski and Chris Roberson.

Overshadowed by the eight-run outburst in the sixth was a solid pitching performance from Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida. He went 7.1 strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits, to get his first win of the season.

Kaohi Downing pitched an inning and a third to get his first save of the season. He needed just 10 pitches in the ninth inning.

Fargo starter Jake Laber takes his third loss of the season.

The Goldeyes will go for their third sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The undefeated Matt Rusch (2-0, 2.31) will start for Winnipeg and will face Tyler Herron (0-1, 3.31).

55 with Forney kicks off TSN 1290's coverage at 11:30 a.m. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
