Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Despite a strong start from Mitchell Clegg, the Sioux Falls Pheasants could not overcome the St. Paul Saints in a 5-3 loss Saturday night at Midway Stadium.

St. Paul finally overtook the Pheasants for good in the seventh inning. Trailing 3-2 in a back-and-forth affair, St. Paul rallied for three runs on five straight hits. Back-to-back singles from Jim Rapoport and Shane Costa tied the game and gave the Saints the lead. Dan Cooper's (1-2) wild pitch allowed another run to score.

Cooper suffered the loss in relief.

The Pheasants could not capitalize on Mitchell Clegg's quality start. Clegg went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked one and struck out one. Clegg never allowed multiple hits in an inning and induced 15 ground ball outs.

Saints starter Robert Coe, pitching on short rest, matched Clegg with a quality start of his own. He allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Reid Mahon (1-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Kyle Carr and Anthony Cleggett combined for a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Cleggett retired the final two batters for his first save of the year.

Cory Morales paced the Pheasants with a 3-for-5 performance. He cracked two doubles and now has six hits, three for extra bases, in the series. Jonny Kaplan was 2-for-5 with an RBI triple. However, the Pheasants stranded 11 men on base, including five in the seventh and eighth innings.

Cristian Guerrero entered the game with a home run in four consecutive games, but he collected one infield single to break the streak that tied a team record (Jermaine Swinton, 2001).

The rubber game of the three-game series is at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, June 10 in St. Paul. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
