Saints Come Back Late to Snap Four Game Losing Streak, Win 5-3

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints could have rolled over after allowing a 2-1 lead get away late in the game, but they showed resilience in snapping their four game losing streak scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as they won 5-3 over the Sioux Falls Pheasants on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,414.

With the Saints up 2-1 in the top of the seventh and starter Robert Coe looking sharp, the Pheasants started a rally when the number nine hitter Joe Anthonsen walked with one out. Jonny Kaplan tripled him home to tie the game at two. With the infield in Coe got Cory Morales to ground out to second. After an intentional walk to Jared Bolden and a walk to Cesar Nicolas loaded the bases, Coe left the game for reliever Reid Mahon. He gave up a 65 foot dribbler up the third base line to Cristian Guerrero that scored a run and gave the Pheasants a 3-2 lead. Coe went 6.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking five and striking out four.

The Saints, however, fought back in the bottom of the inning. They sent nine men to the plate and it started with a one out double from Jon Townsend. He moved to third on an infield single by Alex Garabedian. Jim Rapoport tied the game with a single to left and Shane Costa followed with an RBI single to center giving the Saints a 4-3 lead. Costa finished the night 2-3 with two RBI. A wild pitch allowed the fifth run to score.

The bullpen took over from there. Mahon got into a small jam in the eighth, putting two men on with one out, but struck out Kaplan and got Cory Morales to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Jose Hernandez extended his hitting streak to 17 with a single in the fourth which ties him for sixth longest in Saints history.

The same two teams meet Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in the finale of the three game series. The Saints send RHP Chris Odegaard (0-3, 3.27) to the mound against Pheasants LHP Peter Gehle (1-1, 8.38). It is Bike to the Ballpark presented by Whole Foods. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
