American Association Game Recaps
June 9, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release
Winnipeg 9, Fargo-Moorhead 4
Having fallen behind on an Aharon Eggleston RBI single in the fifth inning, Winnipeg answered in the sixth and answered strongly. The Goldeyes batted around the lineup, registering seven hits - four of them doubles - and scoring eight runs to jump on top for good, eventually winning, 9-4. One of those two-baggers came from DH Jon Weber, who scored twice in the inning to highlight his 2-for-5 night. Weber is creeping toward .400, now batting .397 on the season. For the RedHawks, Eggleston went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the only Fargo-Moorhead player with more than one hit. Starting Goldeyes pitcher Chris Salamida threw 7.1 innings and allowed one run on six hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Newark 6, Gary SouthShore 4
The RailCats brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. But Bears reliever Jorge Vasquez closed the door, striking out Gary SouthShore 1B Mike Rohde to earn the 6-4 win and his seventh save of the year. At the plate for Newark, 2B Juan Martinez went 3-for-5 with two runs, one coming on a solo home run in the first inning. Newark trailed, 4-2, after seven innings. But a two-out rally in the eighth saw Newark score four runs on five hits to take the lead for good. RailCats LF Mike Coles hit his second double of the year, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI as the only Gary SouthShore player with multiple hits.
St. Paul 5, Sioux Falls 3
Having just watched their 2-1 lead become a 3-2 disadvantage in the top of the seventh, the Saints scored three of their own in the bottom of the inning to earn a 5-3 victory over Sioux Falls. The three runs came in three consecutive at-bats - two singles and a wlid pitch - and swung the momentum strongly in the home team's favor. The back-to-back base knocks came from the Saints' Nos. 1 and 2 hitters, CF Jim Rapoport and DH Shane Costa. Costa went 2-for-3 with two RBI, bringing his season total to five. The Pheasants got two hits - including a game-tying RBI triple in the top of the seventh - from leadoff CF Jonny Kaplan, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Lincoln 5, Sioux City 4
Nursing a one-run lead, Saltdogs reliever PJ Zocchi retired three consecutive Sioux City batters in the ninth inning to preserve his team's 5-4 win. It was Zocchi's fifth save of the year and lowered his ERA to 3.24. The Saltdogs built a 5-3 lead in the seventh on a bases-loaded RBI single from CF Mike Provencher. The base knock, which scored RF Stephen Holdren from third, was Provencher's only hit of the game but proved vital. Explorers 3B Wally Backman led all players in hits, going 4-for-5 and scoring in the eighth inning to pull his club within one run. Holdren scored two runs for Lincoln on his 1-for-3 night.
Wichita 10, Kansas City 6
The Wingnuts scored six runs in the final two frames against Kansas City on Saturday, catapulting to a 10-6 victory. Wichita 1B CJ Ziegler tied the game at six runs apiece with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth, his second blast of the game and his sixth of the year. Ziegler went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBI and a double to go along with his two homers. T-Bones LF Brandon Jones matched Ziegler's three hits, but managed a merely mortal one four-bagger. It was his second of the season.
Laredo 5, Amarillo 4
Often the role of the No. 9 hitter is simply to turn the lineup back over to No. 1. Lemurs CF Philip Incaviglia decided to challenge the status quo Saturday night in Laredo and play the hero. In the bottom of the 11th inning locked in a 4-4 tie, Incaviglia took a 1-2 Trent Lare pitch and singled in Palmer Karr Jr. from second to give his club a walkoff, 5-4 victory. Incaviglia went 2-for-5 as one of four Lemurs with multiple hits. Two innings earlier, Sox C Alberto Espinosa scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at four runs apiece and force extras. Lemurs reliever Stephen Kahn pitched a perfect top of the 11th with one strikeout to earn his first win of the year.
El Paso 10, Grand Prairie 7 (In progress - Top 8)
In the top of the eighth inning, the El Paso Diablos lead the Grand Prairie AirHogs, 10-7.
