Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
A two-run single by Courtney Billingslea in the middle of a four-run eighth inning did the RailCats in on Saturday night in a 6-4 loss. Newark third baseman Juan Martinez hit a solo shot to left in the first inning off of RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Mike Coles answered with a solo homer for the RailCats in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at one. It was Coles' first home run of the season and it extended his streak to seven consecutive games with an RBI. He also has a hit in six straight contests.
The RailCats took the lead with a two-out rally in the second. With two out and the bases empty, Brian Kolb walked and stole second. Adam Klein drove him home with a single and Mike Massaro followed with a triple to score Klein. Two batters later, David Cooper reached reached on a bunt single, bringing home Massaro and increasing the lead to 4-1.
Hiscock kept the Bears quiet until the sixth, when he walked in a run to cut the lead to 4-2. T.J. Wohlever came on in relief with the bases loaded and two out and struck out Nick Santomauro to end the inning. The Bears had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the seventh when Chris Allen came on and snagged a grounder up the middle with his bare hand to turn a 1-6-3 double play.
Things came apart for Allen and the RailCats in the eighth inning. Nick Santomauro drove in a run with a single to bring the Bears to within one run at 4-3. With the bases loaded, Billingslea hit a line drive to left-center that scored a pair to put the Bears on top 5-4. Matt Tomczyk's infield single scored pinch-runner Dan Coury and capped the inning to put the Bears up 6-4.
Hiscock had a strong second start for the RailCats, holding the Bears to two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight batters, a season-high for a RailCats pitcher.
The series finale is on Sunday. Kyle Wilson (0-2, 6.35) will toe the rubber for Gary. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 PM.
