Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, TX - Atlantic League officials announced today the 2013 Atlantic League All-Star Game rosters, with six members of the First Half Freedom Division Champion Sugar Land Skeeters selected to participate: catcher Koby Clemens, outfielder Adam Godwin, infielders Dominic Ramos and Aaron Bates, and pitchers Matt Wright and Jason Bergmann.
Clemens has served as the Skeeters primary catcher in 2013 and is currently tied for fourth in the Atlantic League with 13 home runs. The Houston native is currently hitting .215 (39x181) with 39 RBI on the season.
Godwin was acquired by Sugar Land via trade during the offseason and made an immediate impact with the Skeeters. Entering 2013, he had five seasons with 30-or-more stolen bases and has already swiped 29 bags in 2013. Godwin leads the Atlantic League in stolen bases and the Skeeters squad with 43 runs scored.
Ramos, a dominant middle infielder for Sugar Land, has played in 68 games for the Skeeters and is tied for seventh in the Atlantic League with 41 RBI. His RBI stat leads the current Skeeters roster and is two shy of his all-time career mark. A native of Pflugerville, Texas, 2013 marks Ramos' second season playing in the Atlantic League.
Bates has shown consistency with his bat for Sugar Land this season, including a 20-game hit streak from April 24 - May 29 where he went 29x78 (.372). This season, Bates has played 63 games for Sugar Land, primarily at first base, and holds a .311 (69x222) average.
Wright has posted a 9-1 record with a 2.85 ERA (27ER/85.1IP) in 14 starts this year. He holds the honor of being named the only Opening Day starter in Skeeters history (2012-13). The right-hander currently leads the Atlantic League in wins and ERA and ranks fifth in strikeouts (64). Wright is 11-1 all-time in his career with Sugar Land.
Bergmann currently ranks second in the league with 18 saves in as many opportunities this season. A former member of the Washington Nationals (2005-10), the right-handed reliever is 2-0 with a 0.31 ERA (1ER/29IP) and 33 strikeouts in 29 appearances with the Skeeters. This season marks his second in the Atlantic League.
Position players were selected on the basis of online fan voting as well as a poll of team officials, while pitchers were selected by the respective managers for each division.
"This really says a lot about our club," said Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti. "This group has a tremendous amount of work ethic and they're incredible individuals. I know they'll represent Sugar Land well and we're happy for them."
