Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - Friday night's affair with Flint was a battle of outstanding goaltending for Erie, as both team's saw 30+ save nights. With :30 left in the game, Brennan Othmann fired the game-winning goal past Nolan Lalonde, and the Otters would drop a heartbreaker at home. On Saturday night, the Otters would close out their four-game homestand, welcoming the Flint Firebirds back in the EIA, looking for their first win against Flint this season. With Daniel D'Amato back for the night's game after a called slew foot match penalty from the previous, the Otters would look to get going.
The story of the season for the Otters has been hot, heavy-shooting first periods. Nothing deviated from the standard operating procedure for Erie on Saturday night, as the Otters saw one period come-and-go with a 16-4 shots advantage over the Firebirds. Unfortunately for Erie, what did deviate from the norm was scoring the first goal - which they were able to do in three-straight games. With 6:36 gone by in the opening frame - on the other side of a penalty kill - Zacharie Giroux would net his second of the season, and give Erie the first goal of the night. Erie would battle back with a good effort on both their Plymouth Tavern power plays, but be unable to turn the opportunities into goals. With 20 minutes in the books, Erie trailed 1-0 on home ice.
While the first would see a lone goal, five total would be scored between the two foes in the second segment of the game. Action started immediately for the Firebirds, as Amadeus Lombardi (2) would score the second goal of the night just :46 into the new frame. Nearly seven minutes later, Erie would finally get a response on the night, as captain Daniel D'Amato would score his first of the season and make it a 2-1 game. 1:58 later, Brennan Othmann (4) would continue his torturing of the Otters, as he'd once again make it a two-goal lead. Near the end of the period, the Firebirds would add a fourth goal, from Braeden Kressler, but Elias Cohen (3) would receive a perfect feed behind the net from Brendan Hoffmann. With 40 in the books, it'd be a 4-2 game for the Firebirds, with shots in favor of the Otters 16-11 in the period, 32-15 in the game.
The Firebirds would waste no time in the third period to kill off what momentum remained for Erie, as quick goals from Giroux (3) and Lombardi (3) - their seconds of the night - would be enough to lift Flint over Erie. Despite a 44-shot night, Luke Cavallin would once again stand tall against the Otters for 42-saves and another win. Erie would finish 0/4 on the power play, 4/5 on the penalty kill, and outshooting the Firebirds 44-21. Erie finishes the opening month of the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 2-6, as they prepare to cross the Canadian border for the first time in November. International action kicks off for the Otters on Thursday, November 4 as they travel to St. Catherine's, ON to battle the Niagara IceDogs, before a travel day finds them in Windsor on Saturday, November 6 and Sarnia on Sunday, November 7.
The Otters return home before a divisional battle with the Guelph Storm on November 12, and finally host the London Knights on Saturday, November 13 for Military Appreciation Night (pres. by UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Hamot, and Plyler Entry Systems). For the aforementioned promotional night, the team is working with Corporate Partners and fans to help donate over 1500 tickets to active-duty and retired military personnel in the Erie community.
