Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania -- The Otters would return home Saturday as they would play game three of a four game weekend and take on the Flint Firebirds. Looking for their first win of the season against an American foe, Erie would look to bounce back from a tough Friday night in Brantford and avoid their first season series sweep against the Firebirds since 2020.
The contest would get underway with each team looking to establish themselves. It would be the visitors who would find themselves on the board first as Kevin He (31) would score in his eighth-straight to make it 1-0 Firebirds. Erie would respond just minutes later as Kayden Edwards (4) would find the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Just three minutes later, the Otters would find themselves another as Michael Dec (23) would snap one home to give Erie a 2-1. After the goal, a scrap between Luc Plante and Jimmy Lombardi would fire up the Erie crowd. Erie would play a compact hockey game for the rest of the opening period as they would carry a 2-1 lead with them into the second with one second of power play time carrying into the middle frame.
The Firebirds would begin the second period on the front foot as they would look to climb back into the game. Just over four minutes into the second period, Flint would score their tying goal as Jacob Battaglia (21) found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2. Just 12 seconds later, the Firebirds would find themselves on the attack again as Kevin He ([2], 31) would find another multi-goal game as he would turn it around for the Birds and give them a 3-2 lead. The game would remain at this score for the next eight minutes before Michael Dec ([2], PPG, 24) would bank one of the back of the Flint goaltender on the power play to tie the game at 3-3. Erie would stay on the front foot and about five minutes after this tally, Evan Headrick (5) would strike to get the Otters back into the lead at 4-3. This goal would take Erie into the final 20 minutes with the advantage as they would lead 4-3 heading into the third with 26 seconds of power play time for the Otters drifting over into the final frame.
The third period would begin with the Otters looking to put the Firebirds away and collect a huge home win. The visitors would have other ideas as just over four minutes into the final 20, Ihnat Pazii (12) would find the back of the net to bring the game back to even at 4-4. It would be the Otters who would have the last laugh however as about six minutes following the Flint equalizer, Kayden Edwards (GWG, [2], 5) would score his second of the night in back to back home games to make it 5-4 Erie. The Otters would not hold back following this moment as just over two minutes later Evan Headrick ([2], 6) would score his second of the night to give Erie a bit of insurance for the final moments. In those last minutes, Erie would rely on impeccable goaltending from Charlie Burns who was making his first start since January 8 to keep them in the game. Burns would make a number of heroic saves to keep the Otters in the lead for the final exchanges with the Otters able to escape with an unbelievable 6-4 win, giving them their first win of the season against American opposition and wins in back to back home games. Final shots on goal would see Erie out-shoot Flint 44-40 with Burns making 36 saves in the winning effort for the Otters.
The Otters are back in action for a Family Day matinee Monday in Guelph to wrap up the weekend with the final road game of the year against the Storm. The Otters are back home Friday for Get Hooked on Hockey Night (pres. by Fish USA) as they take on the Oshawa Generals for the one and only time on home ice this season.
