Flint Firebirds News Release
ERIE, Pa. - Kevin He scored twice and three Firebirds had two assists apiece, but Flint was beaten by the Erie Otters, 6-4, on Saturday night at the Erie Insurance Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Flint opened the scoring in the first period when Urban Podrekar found He along the left wing. He steamed in and flicked a wrist shot that beat Charlie Burns low and the Firebirds took a 1-0 lead.
Erie answered though with a pair of first period goals. First, Kayden Edwards threw the puck towards the front of the net. It bounced off a Flint stick and into the net to get the Otters on the board. They then took the lead three minutes later when Michael Dec carried the puck into the attacking zone on the left wing. Dec sent a shot high past Mason Courville and Erie went ahead, 2-1.
The Firebirds took the lead back early in the second with a pair of goals scored just 12 seconds apart. First, Jacob Battaglia fed Chris Thibodeau in front of the net. He took a shot that Burns stopped but the rebound was jammed home by Battaglia to tie the game. Then, in the ensuing shift, Thibodeau carried the puck behind the net and fed a trailing He for a one-timer from the slot. He blasted it past Burns and Flint took a 3-2 lead.
The Otters then responded to regain the lead again with two more goals in the second. Erie first struck on a power play as Dec banked a shot off Courville's mask and into the net to even the sore. Then Evan Headrick finished a rebound from the right of the crease, putting Erie back on top, 4-3.
In the third, Flint again tied the game as Ihnat Pazii circled in the attacking zone and found some space near the right wing circle. Pazii darted a wrist shot past Burns and the score was even at four.
Erie again answered though and grabbed the lead back when Ritter Coombs charged the net off a won faceoff and stuffed a shot that Courville stopped. The rebound popped to Edwards though and he slung it past Courville's glove to put the Otters on top. Then then extended their lead two minutes later as Headrick skated through center, into the attacking zone, and sent a snap shot through Courville that made the score 6-4.
Flint pulled Courville for an extra attacker late in the third and hurled shot after shot at Burns but he continually kept the Birds at bay. The Firebirds sent 24 shots on goal in the third period, their most in a single period this season, but could not crack Burns again as they ultimately fell, 6-4. Flint dropped to 36-14-3-2 while Erie improved to 17-32-2-2.
