Sioux Falls tops Pelicans

Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Pelican Park was packed Tuesday evening as 3,362 fans filed through the gates, the largest crowd in the teams five year history, to see the Pelicans take on the Sioux Falls Canaries and post game fireworks and other festivities for the Fourth of July.

The Canaries struck first as the first six batters reached base on three hits and three walks. Abner Arroyo, Dustin Delucchi and former major leaguer Chad Hermansen all came around to score, giving Sioux Falls an early 3-0 lead.

Carlos Mendoza led off the bottom of the third with a base hit and eventually scored when George Branch hit his sixth homerun of the season. The long ball tied him with Juan Rocha for the team lead and the Pelicans cut the lead to one.

The Pelicans tied the game in the fifth but the Canaries stole it right back, scoring in the sixth and the seventh. George Branch led off the fifth with a double and later scored on a Canary throwing error on a hit by Trino Aguilar.

In the seventh the first three Canaries reached base and Ralph Santana came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Dennis Anderson. Going into the bottom of the seventh Sioux Falls held a 5-3 lead over Pensacola.

The Canaries took their two run lead into the bottom of the ninth with Woodruff, Wade and Avila due up. Lenny Bays came in to close things out for the Canaries and got both Woodruff and Wade to strike out swinging. Avila drew the two out walk to bring All-Star third baseman Carlos Mendoza to the plate. After Avila stole second, Mendoza lined a shot up the middle but it was snagged by Bays for the final out of the game.

Wednesdays at Pelican Park will feature former UWF standout Todd Androsko throwing for the Pelicans against Aaron Garrison for the Canaries.
