Three Pelicans Voted to American Association All-Star Team
July 4, 2006 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pensacola Pelicans are proud to announce today that pitcher Rusty Begnaud, third baseman Trino Aguilar and shortstop Carlos Mendoza have been selected to represent the Pelicans and participate in the All-Star game on Tuesday, July 18 in El Paso, Texas.
The league's ten field managers and team media representatives determined the starting lineup, while Lincoln Saltdogs' and All-Star Game manager Tim Johnson selected the reserve players and pitchers.
Carlos Mendoza is one of the best all around players in the American Association and his numbers reflect just that. He is ninth in the league, batting .339 and has a .428 on base percentage, good for fifth. He leads the Pelicans in stolen bases (16), walks (27), doubles (15), hits (60) and is third in runs (28) and RBI (25). He has also been one of the best defensive players in the league, committing only two errors in 46 games at shortstop.
Aguilar has led the league in batting for the majority of the season and is currently fourth with a .358 average. He has scored 30 runs this season and has driven in 23 on 59 hits. Trino has strung together hitting streaks of 11 and eight games this season.
Rusty Begnaud, paralyzed in a swimming pool accident, will not make the trip to El Paso as he is rehabilitating in Atlanta. Rusty was 6-2 this season and still ranks second in the league in wins. His 2.70 ERA also still has him at seventh in the American Association. He struck out 39 hitters in 50 innings while giving up only 17 walks and 15 earned runs.
Last season Pensacola shortstop Joe Espada and pitcher Santos Hernandez represented the Pelicans at the All-Star game.
The American Association All-Stars will take on the All-Stars from the Canadian-American League. Prior to the start of the game, players from both leagues will participate in a skills challenges and a homerun derby.
