St. Joe Places a Pair of All-Stars

July 4, 2006 - American Association (AA)
St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO-Earlier today the American Association announced their 2006 All-Star roster, and a couple of Blacksnakes earned the honor, but there was one glaring omission. DH Jake Whitesides and OF Wil Quintana each were selected to start in the July 18th game against the Can-Am League All-Stars in El Paso, TX. The starters were selected by the league's 10 managers and media representatives and the reserves and pitchers were named by All-Star Game Manager Tim Johnson of Lincoln.

Whitesides, 25, is batting .308 with 19 extra-base hits, including a league-best six triples. The Columbia, MO native is tied for third in the league with 37 runs batted in.

Quintana, 28, carries a .301 batting average with a league-leading 10 home runs and also has 37 runs batted in. The eight-year veteran is among the league-leaders in numerous categories. He is tied for first in home runs (10), tied for third in runs batted in (37), first in slugging percentage (.580) and second in extra-base hits (26).

However, of the nine pitchers named, there was a glaring omission as RHP Mark Nussbeck, second in the league in ERA, was left off the initial roster. Nussbeck, 32, was just named AA Pitcher of the Month for June and carries a 4-2 record and 1.76 ERA with a complete game.

Fittingly, Lincoln placed the most on the squad with four All-Star selections for the team with the AA's best record. St. Paul and Pensacola each placed three on the squad. Of the 20-man roster, 13 come from the North Division where third-place St. Joe's record was good enough to tie for the South Division title in the first half.

League rules state that, like Major League Baseball, each team must be represented on the roster.
