Pensacola, FL - The Sioux Falls Canaries (1-0) opened the second half of play with a 5-3 win over the Pensacola Pelicans (0-1).

The Canaries took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dustin Delucchi and Chad Hermansen walked to put two on for Abner Arroyo. Arroyo hit a ground rule double over the short wall in left field to score Delucchi for a 1-0 lead. A single by Dennis Anderson plated Hermansen for a two-run lead. After John Schmitz walked to load the bases, Chris Hall grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Arroyo for a 3-0 lead.

Pensacola got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. George Branch hit a two-run homer to make it a 3-2 game.

In the fifth inning Branch doubled and Ed Montague walked to put two on for Trino Aguilar. Aguilar singled on a high chopper to third base, but when Chris Hall tried to make the throw to first, he threw it away. Hall's error allowed Branch to score, and the game was tied, 3-3.

The Canaries regained the lead in the sixth. John Schmitz singled and stole second base before scoring on a single by Jason Sugden. Schmitz run put Sioux Falls ahead, 4-3.

The Birds added a run in the seventh when Dennis Anderson hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Santana for the 5-3 final.

Tony Cogan (5-1) picked up the win for Sioux Falls and Lenny Bays recorded his first save of the season. Sam Smith (1-4) took the loss for Pensacola.

The teams will play the second game of the series on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m.
