Everett Silvertips News Release
KENNEWICK, Wash. - Dawson Leedahl scored a goal, added an assist and goaltender Mario Petit turned in a 24 save effort to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 3-1 victory over the Portland Winterhawks in preseason action, Friday at Toyota Center in a tournament hosted by the Tri-City Americans.
The Silvertips earned their fourth win in the first five preseason games and Petit, appearing in net for his third time in the last four games, improved his save percentage to .972 in 163:40 of time in the preseason. Both teams combined for all four goals in the second period, while Patrick Bajkov's second preseason goal stood as the eventual game winner.
Everett, who faces Portland for their next game on Sept. 18, won their second straight preseason contest over the Winterhawks.
Following a scoreless first period in which the Silvertips gained a 17-13 shots advantage, Spencer Gerth's backdoor goal lifted Everett to a 1-0 lead at 4:09 of the second frame, a finish near the right post on Leedahl's feed. Alex Overhardt's fourth goal of the preseason tied the game, 1-1 at 9:12 when he got behind the defense and finished a deke on Petit.
Just 2:24 later, the Silvertips rebounded after a key penalty kill and Patrick Bajkov hammered a slap shot past Michael Bullion for a 2-1 advantage. Petit then perhaps made his most impressive save of the period with successive stops off his left pad after Portland's Austin Gray, Ryan Hughes and Jack Flaman went to work with puck possession.
Leedahl then scored a crucial goal with just 11 seconds left in the period, extending the Silvertips cushion to 3-1 after he took the puck and spun a quick shot inside the post.
The Silvertips, staying out of the penalty box for the final 20 minutes, allowed just three shots in the third period and outshot Portland, 45-25.
Bullion took the loss for Portland on 42 saves.
