Great Lakes Loons News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - In a game that featured plenty of offense and warm, gusty winds blowing out to center field Thursday night, the South Bend Silver Hawks' offense was slightly more potent than that of the Great Lakes Loons in a 10-8 slugfest win.

The game included seven home runs - four by the Silver Hawks, including two by Daniel Palka - and 15 hits by each team.

Jacob Scavuzzo's first inning, two-run home run provided the Loons with a brief advantage two batters into the game. But Palka hit an opposite field three-run shot in the bottom half to put the home team up by one.

The Silver Hawks' bats really came alive in the third inning. Joe Munoz drilled a two-run home run, which was followed by Palka's second homer of the game, a prodigious blast to right off the scoreboard. Two batters later, Diamondbacks' No. 8 prospect Stryker Trahan clubbed a two-run shot that drove Loons starter Victor Arano (2-2) out of the game.

In the fifth inning, Joey Curletta, who entered play as the third-leading hitter in the league, connected on his first home run this season. One inning later, Kyle Farmer followed suit with his first long ball, a two-run shot that pulled Great Lakes to within one run.

That, however, was as close as the Loons got.

Luis De Paula held his ground in relief, allowing the Loons to get back into the game. The lanky lefty did not allow an earned run in 3 2/3 innings.

Jake Roberts (1-0) was credited by the scorer with the victory with a scoreless seventh inning, although lefty Daniel Gibson replaced him and retired all four batters he faced and was statistically more effective. Silvino Bracho retired the final two in the ninth to notch his first save.

Curletta, Alex Santana and newcomer Josmar Cordero recorded three hits each for the Loons.

The Loons and Silver Hawks meet for the middle game of their three-game series Friday night at 7:35pm. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com. Loons veteran right-hander Luis Chirinos (2-2, 6.83 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons. His mound opponent will be righty Adam Miller (2-0, 3.14).

The Great Lakes Loons are an eighth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
