Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Four Fort Wayne pitchers combined to allow only three hits as the TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-2 on Friday night. The loss dropped the Dragons to 20-14 on the season. They are in second place, one and one-half games behind West Michigan.
Fernando Perez led an 11-hit Fort Wayne attack with a solo home run and an RBI single. Fort Wayne scored single runs in the first, second, and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead.
The Dragons battled back in the fifth, loading the bases with no one out on a single by Sammy Diaz and a walk to Carlton Daal before Jon Matthews was hit by a pitch. Jamodrick McGruder then singled to right field to drive in Diaz and make it 3-1. After Jeff Gelalich struck out, Phillip Ervin flied out to deep center field to bring in Daal and pull the Dragons to within one at 3-2. Tanner Rahier flied out to center to end the inning, and the Dragons did not have another base runner the rest of the night.
Fort Wayne added two more runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Amir Garrett (0-3) suffered the loss. He worked five innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with one walk and six strikeouts. Fort Wayne reliever Tony Weiber (1-0) worked three scoreless innings to earn the win while Nick Mutz pitched the ninth to notch his fourth save.
Sammy Diaz went 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Dragons, who received six walks over the first five innings but could not capitalize.
The two teams have split the first two games of the series. They will meet in the rubber match on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field as the Dragons celebrate their 1,000th consecutive sell-out. Nick Travieso (3-1, 1.32) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Erik Cabrera (0-1, 2.70). The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372).
