CLINTON, IA- The Clinton LumberKings used four doubles and took advantage of mistakes to beat the Peoria Chiefs 5-3 on Friday night. The loss, their third straight, drops the Chiefs into a tie with Clinton at 18-15.

"We made a couple mistakes tonight and those plays led to runs," said Chiefs manager Joe Kruzel. "We had the early lead and fought back late but just couldn't take advantage of the chances we had both early and late."

The Chiefs jumped out two a 2-0 lead over the first two innings but left three runners in scoring position as well. Juan Herrera tripled off Edwin Diaz in the top of the first with two outs. He scored on a double by Ronald Castillo for a 1-0 lead but Castillo was left at second. In the second Michael Schulze doubled home Cesar Valera with one out but Diaz got a pair of strikeouts to leave Chiefs at second and third.

Clinton's Austin Wilson drew a leadoff walk from Blake McKnight in the second and Jeff Zimmerman was credited with a double when he snuck into second on a throw to the wrong base after a flare into left-center. Another walk loaded the bases and Corey Simpson tied the game with a double to right. A grounder to second should have been the first out but Valera incorrectly stepped on second instead of tagging the runner when there was no force out and everyone was safe. Ian Miller took advantage with a sac fly for a 3-2 Clinton lead.

The Chiefs tied the game in the fourth against Diaz. Valera led of with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a deep flyout. Mason Katz tied the game with a single to right, his 18th RBI of the season.

Clinton used a two-out rally to take the lead in the fifth. Jack Reinheimer bunted his way on with two outs against McKnight and Wilson doubled to left. Zimmerman collected a real double this time to bring home both runners for a 5-3 lead and end McKnight's outing. The Chiefs got just one hit the rest of the way and didn't have another runner get past first base.

"Our bullpen was outstanding tonight and gave us a chance but we didn't get anything going late," said Kruzel.

McKnight (1-2) took the loss allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings. Chris Perry struck out three and allowed one hit over two shutout innings. Kyle Barraclough struck out two and did not allow a base runner over 1 1/3 innings.
