Shots Don't Add Up for Thunder in Loss

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder lost 5-1 to the Tulsa Oilers at the BOK Center on Saturday night.

Matt Robinson became the first Thunder player to score 30 goals in a season since 2006-07, but a three-goal first period by the Oilers was too much to overcome.

Mike Wirill snuck a backhander near the crease under the left pad of Marc-Antoine Gelinas at 6:30 in the first ti give Tulsa a 1-0 lead. At 12:51, Jason Goulet hauled down Evan Kotsopoulos at the tail end of a breakaway, leading to a penalty shot. Kotsopoulos converted the free chance with a backhander through Gelinas' five-hole. The Oilers made it 3-0 at 13:10 when Anthony Battaglia deflected a rising puck just inside the right post.

Tulsa extended their lead to 4-0 when Marty Standish scored shorthanded 25 seconds into the second period. Robinson punched in a loose puck on the backdoor at the 9:59 mark in the third. Chad Costello scored on an empty net at 19:23 to provide the final margin.

The Thunder pounded out a season-high 53 shots while allowing a season-low 11. Marc-Antoine Gelinas took the loss, allowing three goals on three shots in the first. Kevin Beech saved seven of eight over the final two periods in relief. Ian Keserich picked up the win, stopping 52 of 53. Wichita was 0 for 6 on the power play while Tulsa was 0 for 2.

Prior to the game, the Thunder defeated the Oilers 9-8 in the teams' first ever alumni game.
