Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks and Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs squared off at Independence Events Center Saturday night for the third and final meeting between the two teams this season. The Mavericks scored three goals in the final three minutes of the game to beat the Mudbugs, 3-0. Forward Todd Griffith recorded two goals and goaltender Robby Nolan notched his fourth shutout of the season in the victory for the Mavericks.
The first period lacked some offensive productivity, but both teams combined for 19 shots, with the Mavericks racking up 10 shots in the period to Bossier-Shreveport's nine. Neither team had a power play in the period, but Carlyle Lewis and David Pszenyczny got involved in a short fracas after a scrum after the whistle. Lewis went off for slashing, while Pszenyczny received a penalty for cross checking.
The scoreless trend continued into the second period. The Mavericks shut down the Mudbugs' offense in the period, allowing a team-record zero shots from the visitors. The Mavs racked up eight shots in the period and went zero-for-three in the middle frame, while holding Bossier-Shreveport to zero goals on two power play attempts. The Mavericks held the Mudbugs to zero shots for a total of 28:03.
The third period seemed to be heading in the direction preceding it, but a three-goal outburst by Missouri in the final three minutes of regulation blasted open the game. Griffith took a pass from Mike Berry on a two-on-one, odd-man rush, deked DeCaro from left to right and slid the puck underneath the sprawling goaltender to put the Mavs up by one with under three minutes to play. Then, just 30 seconds later, Griffith forced a turnover in the neutral zone and buried another goal on the breakaway attempt, putting the Mavs up 2-0. Toby Lafrance delivered the knockout blow to Bossier on a breakaway goal of his own, giving the Mavericks the final goal of the game and climbing to a 3-0 victory.
The three goals scored in one minute, seven seconds by the Mavs are a franchise record for fastest three goals in a game. The Mavs finished the night zero-for-three on the power play. The Mudbugs didn't see success with man power advantages either, going zero-for-four on the night. Nolan finished the night with 15 saves on 15 shots and collected his fourth shutout of the season, a career high. DeCaro stopped 26 of 29 shots by Missouri.
The Mavs now head to Evansville to take on the Icemen at Swonder Ice Arena tomorrow evening. Next weekend, the Mavericks head to Rapid City to take on the Rapid City Rush on Friday and Saturday. The Mavs then return home on Tuesday, March 1 when they take on the Dayton Gems for the first time at Independence Events Center. Tickets are available for all Mavericks' home games at the Independence Events Center Box Office, by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.TicketMaster.com.
