Late Thomas Goal Topples Mallards

MOLINE, Ill. - Leo Thomas scored the winning goal with 1:09 left in the third period as the Fort Wayne Komets rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the host Quad City Mallards 3-2 Saturday night.

Thomas charged into the slot and buried a loose puck to break a 2-2 deadlock with the third unanswered Komet goal.

The Komets found themselves in need of a comeback after the Mallards scored twice in just under two minutes to jump out to a 2-0 first period lead. Tyler Shelast tipped in the game's first goal at 8:59 of the first. At 10:45, Jake Riddle swooped down the slot to finish off a 3-on-2 rush with a close range backhander. The two-goal gap lasted only a little over two minutes before P.C. Drouin fired the first Fort Wayne goal home from the slot at 12:51.

The Komets tied the game at two while on the power play at 17:01 of the second period when Colin Chaulk pounced on a loose puck between the circles.

The Mallards next take to the ice Monday night in Bloomington against the PrairieThunder. The Mallards next play at home on Saturday, March 5 at 7:05 p.m. against the Missouri Mavericks.
