March 1, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH – A shorthanded goal from center Peter Sejna with 2:53 to play served as the game-winner as the Worcester IceCats edged the Monarchs, 2-1, before 9,413 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Tuesday night. The win was the second for the IceCats over the Monarchs in less than a week. The IceCats also topped the Monarchs, 2-1, at the DCU Center on February 23.

Nine games into the season series, the Monarchs have a record of 6-3-0-0 against the IceCats. The teams will meet one last time at the DCU Center on the last night of the regular season, Sunday, April 17.

For the second consecutive game, the Monarchs missed out on an opportunity to increase their lead in the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division over the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Monarchs, who are scheduled to meet the Wolf Pack at the Hartford Civic Center on Wednesday night, have a record of 37-15-3-3 and 80 points. They lead the Wolf Pack (36-18-2-2 and 76 points) by four points in the standings.

The win was an important one for the IceCats, who are locked in the middle of a playoff chase in the division. With a record of 32-22-3-2 and 69 points, they left Tuesday's game tied with the Providence Bruins for third place in the division.

Sejna picked the pocket of goaltender Adam Hauser (24 shots, 22 saves) behind the Monarchs net to score his 12th goal of the season. The goal sent the Monarchs to their first-ever three-game losing streak on home ice. The shorthanded goal was the league-leading 15th allowed by the Monarchs this season.

The teams skated through a high-energy opening period that included plenty of chances to score, but no goals. IceCats center Jay McClement started things off with a breakaway just 20 seconds in, but Hauser calmly kicked away his short-range wrist shot. IceCats center Brendan Brooks saw his breakaway chance stopped in a similar fashion later in the period.

The near capacity crowd unleashed its loudest cheer of the period and the night at 2:24 when left wing Ryan Flinn fought IceCats newly signed left wing Justin Maiser. Flinn, appearing in his first home game since returning from a November foot injury, pounded the rookie with a series of right hands before the linesmen jumped in.

The Monarchs best chance to score in the stanza came with 4:08 remaining when rookie right wing Ryan Kinasewich fed rookie center Jeff Miles for a one-timer in the right circle. Miles got all he wanted on the shot, but still couldn't stuff it past IceCats goaltender Curtis Sanford (34 shots, 33 saves).

The end-to-end action continued in the middle period with both teams collecting goals in the first 10 minutes. Center Michael Cammalleri added to his league-leading goal total when he roofed his 33rd of the year over Sanford's shoulder at 5:28. Right wing Brad Smyth and left wing Noah Clarke shared assists as Cammalleri extended his scoring streak to seven games (2-7=9).

The IceCats tied the game on the power play 2:02 later with the 15th goal of the season for Brooks, jammed through Hauser's pads on a rebound in front of the net. Center Blake Evans and defenseman Mike Mottau had assists on the play.

Sanford improved his record to 15-16-2 with the win, his second against the Monarchs this season. Hauser saw his record dip to 13-8-0.

The Monarchs and the Wolf Pack are set to meet on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. After that, they return home for a Sunday, March 6 match-up with the Bruins (4:05 p.m.).
