Shorebirds Top Suns 6-2 in Series Finale

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (9-5) scored six unanswered runs between the third and fifth innings to defeat the Hagerstown Suns 6-2 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in the series finale. The Shorebirds have won five games in a row and are tied for first place in the Northern Division with the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

The Suns took their first lead of the series in the third inning. With runners at second and third, Hendry Jimenez hit a double off the lower part of the foul pole in left field to score both runners.

The Shorebirds countered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Sammie Starr and Glynn Davis hit back-to-back one out singles. Then, John Ruettiger singled through the right side to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Ruettiger has eight RBIs in his last five games. The Shorebirds tied the game on a grounder to third by Esposito.

The Shorebirds took the lead in the fourth inning. Mikey Planeta led off with a double to left field. Then, Nicky Delmonico singled. Mychal Givens followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Then, Starr hit a grounder to third that scored Planeta. Glynn Davis added an RBI single.

In the fifth, Nicky Delmonico blasted a two run double to the right field wall to increase the lead to 6-2.

Tim Berry allowed two runs in the third, but held the Suns to just six hits to earn his first win of the season. Berry fanned six batters and walked just one.

Jake Cowan entered with two outs in the sixth inning and retired all 10 batters he faced.

The Shorebirds play game one of four at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro on Thursday, April 19 at 7:00 pm.
