POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost 12-7 on Tuesday night to Asheville at Appalachian Power Park. The Power held a 2-0 lead after five innings, but could not maintain the advantage for starter Matt Benedict. The Tourists tied the game in the sixth and plated seven in the seventh to take the lead for good. David Kandilas hit a grand slam to key the scoring in the Asheville seventh. The Power got two back in the home half of the inning and each team scored three times in the ninth. Porfirio Lopez took the loss after surrendering six runs on one hit, three walks, and two hit batters in two-thirds of an inning of work.
NOT HERE TO SEE THE SIGHTS: Asheville has scored 105 runs this season over 13 games played, including five games against West Virginia. During those five games, the Tourists have scored 57 runs, accounting for 54% of their total runs in 2012.
RELIEF REINFORCEMENTS: The Pirates made two roster moves Tuesday to bolster the Power bullpen. Mike Jefferson and Orlando Castro both pitched Monday night and were transferred to the State College Spikes roster. To fill the void, Pittsburgh promoted Vince Payne from State College and transferred Porfirio Lopez from Bradenton to West Virginia. Payne and Lopez each pitched for the Power last season, and Lopez had already appeared in three games for the Marauders this year. The southpaw had not allowed a run over six innings of Florida State League work.
SHUTOUT STORY: Prior to Monday night, West Virginia and Asheville were the only two teams in the South Atlantic League that have not been involved in a shutout on either side this season.
SNAPPED TIMES TWO: West Virginia's first winning streak of the season was snapped with Monday's loss. Greg Polanco also saw his streak stopped. The Power centerfielder had reached safely in seven straight games by base hit and was batting .370 during his streak with four home runs and 11 runs batted in.
HELLO AGAIN: West Virginia continues its three game series with Asheville tonight. The Power trail 33-23 in the all-time set after having been swept last week at McCormick Field and losing last night. The Tourists lead at Appalachian Power Park by six wins with a 19-13 mark since 2005. These clubs will meet 12 times total this season, all of which are before the 2012 All-Star break.
LEADER AT THE TOP: Alen Hanson is among the South Atlantic League leaders in eight different offensive categories: games (tied for 1st), home runs (tied for 1st), at bats (1st), hits (1st), slugging percentage (2nd), extra base hits (tied for 1st), runs scored (2nd), and total bases (1st).
PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 27: The Power will host a Charlies Reunion Night on April 27 at Appalachian Power Park. Former Charleston Charlies like Kent Tekulve, Steve Blass, and Dave Parker will be in attendance for the game and will sign autographs. A commemorative Charlies giveaway will also be handed out to the fans in attendance.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is batting .247 at home this season after being held to three hits in 29 at bats last night... Asheville's 16 runs and 17 hits on Monday were the most runs allowed by Power pitchers since August 26, 2010 at Augusta (18 runs) and the most hits since July 17, 2011 against Charleston (17 hits)... The Power and Augusta GreenJackets have turned a league-low five double plays this season. West Virginia has not turned multiple double plays in any game this year... Tyler Austin of Charleston and Matt Barnes of Greenville were the SAL Players of the Week for April 5-15.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh rallied to beat Arizona 5-4, though starter Jeff Karstens left the game in the first with shoulder inflammation... Indianapolis lost 5-1 to Columbus... Altoona was shutout 4-0 by Harrisburg... Bradenton fell 9-6 against Palm Beach.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
