Greenville starter Matt Barnes pitched six shutout innings, struck out nine batters and allowed only three hits as the Drive defeated the Lexington Legends 4-2 in front of 6, 892 fans on Education Day at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Barnes, a first round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2011, has not allowed a run in 16 innings this season, covering three starts. He has 25 strikeouts and has walked only two batters.

Legends pitchers Jonas Dufek and Nathan Pettus kept Greenville off the board through the first five innings. Dufek, the starter, had to leave the game with two outs in the second inning after being struck in the right arm by a line drive hit by David Renfroe. Dufek recovered to throw Renfroe out at first base, but could not continue pitching and was relieved by Pettus. Dufek, a right-hander, suffered a contusion of the right forearm.

The Drive broke through in the sixth. After Blake Swihart led off with a double, Garin Cecchini and Boss Moanaroa walked to load the bases. Dayan Diaz relieved Pettus, and Henry Ramos followed with a two-run single. Ramos was tagged out in a rundown between first and second as Moanaroa advanced to third. A single by Keury De La Cruz brought Moanaroa home, giving Greenville a 3-0 lead.

Renfroe hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth for Greenville's final run.

The Legends' runs came with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Zach Johnson singled and Matt Duffy homered.

Barnes (2-0) got the win. Pettus (0-2) took the loss. Greenville won two out of three in the series. The Legends begin a four-game road trip in Kannapolis Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
