
Shorebirds Score Late to Top RiverDogs, 6-4

Charleston, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (14-14) scored five unanswered runs between the ninth and tenth innings to come from behind to knock off the Charleston RiverDogs (19-8) 6-4 in ten innings on Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The Shorebirds were trailing 4-1 going into the ninth before rallying to tie the game with three runs.
The Shorebirds scored the first run of the night in the third. Nicky Delmonico reached on a two out walk, the 15th straight game in which he has reached base. With Delmonico at second, Jason Esposito pulled a single into left field to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.
The RiverDogs evened the score in the third. Casey Stevenson hit a one out single and scored on a throwing error by Sammie Starr.
In the fifth, the RiverDogs took their first lead of the night. Kelvin De Leon hit a one out single and moved to third on a double by Casey Stevenson. Ali Castillo grounded to short to plate De Leon. Then, Mason Williams yanked a double to right field to score Castillo, who reached on fielder's choice.
Shorebirds starter Eduardo Rodriguez lasted six innings. He allowed seven hits and three runs, two of them earned.
The RiverDogs added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Mason Williams doubled to the warning track in left-center field. Williams stole third and scored on a single to left field by Angelo Gumbs.
The Shorebirds stormed back in the ninth inning. Gabriel Lino reached on an error by third baseman Stevenson. The Shorebirds loaded the bases after back-to-back walks. Then, Glynn Davis scored Lino on a fielder's choice grounder towards second. Starr drove home Narron on a single into left field to cut the deficit to 4-3. Later in the inning, Justin Dalles hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Davis and tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ben Gamel singled and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, Stevenson singled into center field and Glynn Davis launched a perfect one-hop throw to the plate to nail Gamel and send the game to extra innings.
The Shorebirds took the lead in the tenth inning. Brenden Webb hit a leadoff triple that rattled off the side wall in right field. Later in the inning, Givens hit a high chopper to third and Webb beat the throw to the plate to give the Shorebirds a 5-4 lead. Davis followed with a single to left-center field to give the Shorebirds a 6-4 lead.
Zach Davies entered in the seventh inning and tossed the final four innings to earn the win. He allowed just one run.
RiverDogs starter Caleb Cotham picked up a no-decision over six innings. He yielded just four hits and a run.
The Shorebirds and RiverDogs square off in game two of the series on Sunday night at 5:05pm. RHP Miguel Chalas is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
