Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Hagerstown, MD - On Cinco de Mayo, the number of the day for the Augusta GreenJackets was cuatro...as in four hits. For the third straight day, the GreenJackets lost in a game where they were held to four hits or fewer with the latest coming in a 4-1 Saturday night loss to the Hagerstown Suns.
The Suns scored a pair in the fourth to break up what was starting as a pitchers' duel between Hagerstown's Alex Meyer and Augusta's Bryce Bandilla. With runners at first and second and no one out in the fourth, Kelby Tomlinson bobbled a potential double play ball, only getting the out at first and allowing the other runners to advance to second and third. Steven Souza's groundout brought home Hagerstown's first run and JP Ramirez followed by beating out a slow roller to short for an RBI infield single to put the Suns ahead 2-0.
Augusta got one run back in the fifth when Michael Mergenthaler led off the inning with a double and took third on a wild pitch. Chuckie Jones followed with his second RBI single in as many nights to cut Hagerstown's lead to 2-1. Tomlinson drew a two-out walk to put runners at first and second for the GreenJackets, but Jose Cuevas followed with a fly out to right to end the inning and the GreenJackets would get no closer.
Steven Souza single-handedly grew the Hagerstown lead to 4-1 on solo home runs against GreenJackets relievers in the sixth and eighth innings. Souza drilled Kevin Couture's first pitch out of the ballpark in the sixth and he greeted Keith Bilodeau in similar fashion in the eighth to complete his two-homer night.
Bandilla (1-2) dropped his second straight start, firing a season-best five innings. He allowed two runs on three hits while walking a season-high six and striking out a season-high six. Alex Meyer (2-3) rebounded from a tough-luck loss last Sunday to get the win for the Suns on Saturday. He fired seven innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out six.
The Suns have now won four in a row and ten of their last 13 while the GreenJackets have dropped three straight. In all three losses, the GreenJackets have been held to four hits or fewer.
The GreenJackets send Kyle Crick (0-1, 2.30) to the mound to try and snap their losing skid against Suns righty Taylor Hill (3-1, 3.15). First pitch from Hagerstown comes at 1:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Thursday May 10th to open a series with the Greenville Drive on the second Thirsty Thursday of the year, presented by The Library, with dollar soft drinks and draft beers available.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
