Asheville Tourists News Release

Friday night at McCormick Field once again belonged to the visitors. West Virginia broke out to an early lead and Asheville was unable to overcome the quick Power start. With the 8-5 victory, West Virginia won its third straight over Asheville and took the series three games to one.

In the top of the first inning, Tourists starter Vianney Mayo (1-3, 5.28) had a runner at second with two outs when Dan Gamache doubled home the games initial run. Gamache trotted home shortly after the next batter, Willy Garcia, hit his third two-run Home Run of the series.

Trailing 3-0, the Tourists plated a pair in the third. Asheville had runners at the corners when Brian Humphries grounded into an RBI fielder's choice. Two batters later, Harold Riggins drove in Humphries with a two-out single. The Power answered immediately.

With one out in the fourth, West Virginia recorded three straight base hits off Mayo; the final hit a three-run Home Run off the bat of Carlos Mesa. The round-tripper put the Power in front 6-2 and they would soon increase the lead even further. Jose Osuna doubled in a run in the fifth and later scored on a wild pitch.

Asheville rallied for one in the bottom of the fifth and two in their half of the sixth. Two Alen Hanson errors led to the Tourists' six inning rally. Power reliever Robert Kilcrease finished the game by retiring 10 batters in a row. He pitched four innings in relief of Matt Benedict (2-1, 1.97) and notched his first save of the season.

The Tourists welcome the Lexington Legends into town tonight. This will be the first meeting this season between the two clubs and game five of the current eight-game homestand for the T's.
