Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston Riverdogs suffered their toughest loss of the season so far, as the Delmarva Shorebirds scored three runs in the ninth inning to tie the game and won it with two in the tenth for a 6-4 win with 4,270 in attendance at The Joe. The RiverDogs still remain in first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division with a 19-10 record, while the Shorebirds are now 14-14.
Mt. Juliet, TN native Caleb Cotham struck out seven batters of four hit baseball over five innings allowing just one run en route to what seemed like a victory. Unfortunately the bullpen was not quite as sharp as Charleston's starter, and they couldn't close the door on Delmarva in the 9 th. After solid relief work by John Brebbia and Pedro Guerra, Delmarva broke out with three runs in the inning against Mariel Checo. After an error and two walks, a fielder's choice scored one run and a single by Sammie Starr (2-6, RBI) scored the second. Another single loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly by Justin Dalles tied the score.
The Shorebirds took the lead in the tenth inning against Ben Paullus (1-1). A double by Brenden Webb opened the inning and he scored on a fielder's choice. They added a second run on a Glynn Davis (2-5, 2 RBI, run scored) RBI single.
Delmarva struck first with a two out rally to score a run on a walk, fielder's choice everybody safe, and then an RBI single by Jason Esposito in the third inning. The RiverDogs responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Casey Stevenson (3-4, 2 runs) scored on an error. They then took the lead in the fifth when Kelvin De Leon singled, Stevenson doubled, and runs scored on a fielder's choice and then a double by Mason Williams (2-5, RBI, run). Charleston added what seemed like an insurance run in the 7th when Williams doubled and scored on an Angelo Gumbs single.
This loss marked the first time in 2012 that the RiverDogs lost a game in which they had led after eight innings. It was also the first extra innings loss this season for Charleston.
