STAT OF THE NIGHT: With 11 more hits, Ty Kelly will become just the second player in franchise history to record 100 hits in two different seasons. The only other player to accomplish the feat is Quincy Ascencion, who had 112 hits in 2005 and 104 hits in 2006. Kelly had 126 hits in 2010 (17th most in a single season in franchise history) and has 89 hits this year. Gary Cates is the all-time hits leader with 360, but he only recorded 100 hits once in 2001.
PREVIEW: The Shorebirds used a dominant debut by David Baker en route to a 7-3 win in game three as they gear up for the series finale. Baker retired 14 of the first 15 batters and did not allow a runner to second base until the sixth inning. He tossed seven shutout innings in his first SAL start. With a win tonight, the Shorebirds would lock up their first series win since June 27-30 when they beat Greensboro three games to one.
THREE-HIT DAY FOR MOONEY: Michael Mooney put together a 3-for-5 day yesterday. The three hits are a season high. Mooney has just one other 3-hit game in the minors (7/17/09). Mooney was 1-for-19 in six games prior to last night.
TRAVIS STRONG JOINS PEN: Travis Strong is the newest right-handed pitcher in the Shorebirds bullpen. He was called up from Aberdeen yesterday. The Wildomar, CA native posted a 1-0 record with a 2.25 ERA in six relief appearances for the Ironbirds. Strong was a 39th round selection of the Orioles in 2010. He did not pitch at Palomar JC in 2010 because of Bicep Tendonitis. In '09, he went 2-0 with a 3.46 at Palomar.
NINE-GAMER FOR JOE: Shorebirds catcher Joe Oliveira extended his hit streak to nine games with a single in the seventh inning last night. He is 10-for-31 (.322) during the streak.
PETTIT TOSSES GEM: Jacob Pettit tossed a six-inning shutout in his Frederick debut last night.
NOWAK WALKING: Jeremy Nowak has ten walks in the month of July (12 games played). He has walked 14 times in 19 games played.
HR BALL: The Shorebirds pitching staff has surrendered a homer in six of the last seven games and four straight games. Dustin Garneau of Asheville has hit a homer in three straight games.
13 OUTFIELD ASSISTS: Brenden Webb is tied for the South Atlantic League lead with 13 outfield assists. Adam Bailey of Lexington and Rafael Ortega of Asheville also have 13 outfield assists.
